BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—In our fourth Q&A session, IUHoosiers.com caught up with Water Polo sophomore utility Izzy Mandema. Mandema helped the Hoosiers with 38 goals this season, including five against Cal State Monterey Bay and added five assists, 30 drawn exclusions, 13 steals and seven field blocks.
Where are you at right now?
I am in Manhattan Beach.
How are you interacting with your teammates?
Mainly interacting with my teammates via social media.
What advice would you give your fellow Hoosiers during this time?
The advice I would give to my fellow Hoosiers during this time is make the most of what is going on. While these are unprecedented times we must look for the joy in the things we do have.
What are you most looking forward to when you get back on the field/court/course?
I am so excited to be back with my teammates and just being able to play the sport we love all together.
How has the adjustment gone to online classes?
Most of my classes were actually hybrid classes already (meaning that most of the work is online). The adjustment was not too bad. I really missed interacting with my classmates. We made the best of it over zoom.
What gives you encouragement and motivation during this time?
My teammates, my friends, and my family.
What is something you and your family are doing to pass the time?
My family and I have been walking/hiking a lot.
What shows are you watching?
I finally finished Money Heist since I had some extra time recovering from surgery. Otherwise, I really have not been watching a lot of shows lately. We try to do movie nights twice a week.
What is your major and what are your future career plans?
My major is community public health with a focus in epidemiology. I hope to work with communities who were hit with some type of epidemic and help get them back on their feet and to be better prepared for whatever may come next.
