Postgame Quotes
Indiana Head Coach Archie Miller
Opening Statement:
MILLER: Disappointed in tonight's performance. I give Purdue credit. I thought they played with edge, with a lot of confidence, and shot the ball extremely well. We did not have an answer offensively and we played poor on defense. To be honest, they could have done whatever they wanted offensively because we had no answer other than the last eight minutes of the first half. I thought our ball pressure went up and we had some deflections. Started to get back in the game that way. For a good portion of this game our offense scored and at the end of the day just could not get stops. They made shots and they made a lot of them. We did not deserve to win the game. We will have to take this one and eat it. It hurts. Disappointed in the performance and that is on me. We are going to have to go back to work. We will not have the game against Michigan State hanging in front us on Sunday and sometimes that is the best answer. For our team, we need to go back to work. We are going to have to figure some things out defensively because if we do not have that then we will be in big trouble going forward.
On guarding the 3-point line…
MILLER: They got too comfortable once they got going. Bottom line is that they were too comfortable the rest of the game. They played easy. I thought they had some real break downs of underneath out of bounds defense. They did a really good job of picking on us there. They got six to nine points right away on that special teams area which has been good to us so they did a good job. They got free tonight and made them. I give them credit, coming into the game they were not shooting the ball well from a lot of guys but they have been capable in their career so once they were confident, they got going. I think mid-way through the second half the from 3-point line they were still shooting it incredibly well. As you look at it recently the 3-point line has been something that we have struggled to guard since the beginning of January.
On the game plan for Armaan Franklin…
MILLER: Her practiced a little bit yesterday, went through game day shoot around today, and he was cleared to go. I asked him before the game how he felt and he said he felt good. I am sure he will be sore tomorrow as he played a lot of minutes tonight. I thought he was very aggressive but it was his first game back because he did not shoot as well. He had seven defensive rebounds and three steals so I thought he made some good things happen. It is good to have him back. He and Rob Phinisee were both shaky coming into the game. I did not think Rob had a lot in him coming off the Nebraska game where he sprained his knee. Those things had nothing to do with today though. Those guys were available and ready to go. With the game not happening on Sunday we can take some time and get more recovery because we need it. Our effort tonight was not as good as it needed to be.
On cutting the Purdue leads down from 12 and six-minute stretch without a field goal…
MILLER: Our stretch in the first half the group that was in there played extremely hard. Race Thompson I thought gave amazing effort all game long. He did his best. He was undersized in there a little bit. I thought Race gave great effort. It wasn't as easy for him. Our ball pressure really picked up. We had a bunch of deflections and we were able to score the ball, a couple big shots at the end of the half. Jerome made a three and we were able to cut into it and be right there. Then I think the first four to eight minutes of the second half, offensively we were fine. They didn't give us much problems around the rim. We were able to score, but we just couldn't get stops. This team has to be able to get stops. We have to find a way to play defensively very tough minded and find a way to have its defense as something it relies on. Offense is hard. Sometimes you are not going to shoot the ball well. We shot 3-for-18 from three, they shot 11-for-17 from three. They went 20-for-31 from the line, we went 16-of-29. We missed 13 free-throws, missed a few pairs went 3-for-18 from three, they shoot the ball really well so your defense has to be good and tonight it wasn't. That is what happens in this league when you don't have that side of the ball in check.
On the schedule for the next week without having the game at Michigan State…
MILLER: I don't know. This is the first time all season long we have been put in this situation, where we were going to have some kind of disruption in the schedule. We have been pretty smooth all the way through. We don't have another game scheduled until Iowa next Thursday. This is the first time all season our guys would look at say there is a week in between games that they are not in school. I think every team, I can't speak for every coach, but every team right now is going through it. It is a mental grind with very few times off. The testing, the practices, the games, we had three games in seven days last week. We were getting ready to do three more in six days next week. It comes at a time where I look at it and say, number one, we have a couple guys that are banged up, couple guys playing too many minutes, let's make sure we are smart with them. At the same time, we have a few extra days here to maybe lock in and try to improve on a few things defensively. I think that is a big concern right now. We can't lose that defense. We can't lose the ability to hang in there with our defense. Offensively, we are going to have to shoot the ball a little better and make some more free-throws. I think if you look at our field goal percentage minus the threes and the three-throws we probably scored it around the two-point area pretty good. Purdue is typically really good at defending the two. We have a lot to work on. At the end of the day, in this league one loss feels monumental, just because of the grind you are on and one win feels great, but a lot more coming. We have to be better and we have to be ready.

Q. On the loss…
FRANKLIN: It is not a fun thing, losing to a team that many times in a row. It gets kind of old; you know. We want to be the team to change the culture about it, rewrite the story. We wanted to do that tonight, but unfortunately, we did not make enough plays, did not make enough shots. So, we will see them again, so we will try to pick it up the next time.
Q. On the defense's slow start to start…
FRANKLIN: I think we let them get comfortable. They saw a few threes go in; you know. They are a good 3-point shooting team. You see some go in, you get confident. Then they got their big guys going, rebounds and things like that. We have got to come and play harder than them the first eight minutes of the game the second time.
Q. On the week's preparation…
FRANKLIN: A long week. A lot of treatment three times a day. Icing, stretching, trying to get my range of motion back. I think I practiced on, was that Tuesday. I did not feel that great. It was just because I was stiff. I had not done anything is about a week. Yesterday I felt pretty good. Today I woke up, felt good enough during shoot around. I felt like I could get out there and do some things, help the team out. I felt pretty good, I mean, yeah.
Q. On the late game push…
FRANKLIN: I do not remember exactly what happened, but I am pretty sure, we just did not get enough stops, offensive rebounds. They got us on the glass. They were getting shots, they made big shots down the stretch to extend the lead. It was just a mixture of all those things.
