
Late Rally Leads to Fall Win at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – It was 14 innings of work and the Indiana baseball program managed 24 hits and 11 pitchers piled up 17 strikeouts in an 18-16 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday (Oct. 17) at the UC Baseball Stadium to wrap up its second fall scrimmage.
A steady stream of offense helped IU rally for a victory over Cincinnati and the trio of Joe Moran, Jack Walker and Reese Sharp all tossed scoreless innings to close out the contest and afford the Hoosier offense the chance to rally for the win. Cincinnati scored 15 of its 16 runs over the first eight innings, but IU held the Bearcats just one run over the final six frames.
IU scored four times in the 14th inning to earn the win, as five straight Hoosiers reached base with one out and two scored to knot the game at 16 a piece. Bobby Whalen's RBI base hit go the scoring started and the sophomore promptly stole second and third base before he scored on an Evan Goforth base hit to tie the game. Morgan Colopy delivered the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk and Matthew Ellis added an another RBI base hit.
Offensively for IU, Kip Fougerousse drove in three RBIs and led the team with four hits. Colopy had a game-high four runs and four RBIs on a pair of hits and three walks. Goforth chipped in three hits, scored one run and drove in a pair of RBIs and Carter Mathison added three hits in the contest.
Peter Serruto chipped in two hits and scored four runs in the game, while Whalen singled, scored one run, drove in one RBI, walked twice and stole two bases. The top of the order in Tyler Doanes and Phillip Glasser each had two hits in the game, with Glasser scoring two runs and Doanes adding one runs scored.
On the mound, nine of 11 Hoosier pitchers struck out at least one batter, as Jackson Perkins posted a game-high four punchouts in three innings of work. Braydon Tucker and Ty Bothwell each fanned three batters.

Brehmer allowed the seven runs in the inning, with a three-run home run by Boston Smith ending his outing and capping the scoring for the Bearcats. Mathison then stole third base and scored when the Bearcats misplayed a rundown between first and second. Fougerousse then brought home the second run of the frame when his popup was lost in the sun by the shortstop.
