Indiana Battles No. 2 Michigan to the Brink in 5-3 Defeat

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Field Hockey team fought No. 2 Michigan to the very end on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) but couldn't overcome the Wolverines' offense in a 5-3 loss in Bloomington.
With the defeat, IU moves to 8-8 (2-5) while Michigan goes to 12-1 (4-1) on the season.
KEY MOMENTS
• IU opened the scoring early on after redshirt sophomore defender Sydney Keld tipped the ball into the goal off of assists from freshman defender Yip van Wonderen and freshman midfielder Kira Curland.
• The second corner of the game was just as lethal for the Hoosiers. Freshman midfielder Sofia Arrebola Garcia got a tap-in goal at the far post off assists from Curland and Keld.
• Michigan grabbed two goals in the second period to bring the score level heading into the break.
• The Wolverines got two more goals off penalty corners in the third period to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.
• IU's offense got going again in the fourth period. Keld's shot from the corner was heading to the back corner of the net but Michigan goalie Anna Spieker got a foot to it to send it wide in the 51st minute.
• Sophomore forward got the final goal of the afternoon after tapping in a penalty corner goal to bring IU within two at the end of the match.
NOTABLES
• Dillon's goal was her third in as many games.
• Arrebola Garcia grabbed her second goal of the season while Keld grabbed her third of the year.
• Curland had two assists and two shots giving her four points and 10 shots for the weekend.
• The three goals IU scored against Michigan was the most the No. 2 Wolverines had given up all season long.

• IU's season continues next Friday afternoon for the home finale and senior day celebration against St. Louis. The Hoosiers will honor seniors Hailey Couch, Peyton Becker, Jes McGivern and Mary Kate Kesler before the 12:00 p.m. match.
