BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Amidst a four-match shutout streak, an Indiana men's soccer student-athlete has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight cycle.
Marking the fifth occurrence in his career and his first of the season, junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano has been named the Big Ten's top defender via the conference office's announcement on Tuesday (Oct. 19).
Celentano made four crucial saves in the span of 15 minutes in Indiana's 1-0 Big Ten road win against Penn State, including a pair of impressive diving stops, and finished with five total saves. With the victory, Celentano became the 13th keeper in program history to reach 30 wins.
Earlier in the week, the Napierville, Illinois, native led the Hoosiers to another conference clean sheet as they took care of Ohio State, 3-0, at home. Celentano had four saves in the match.
The IU defense has been solid to help Indiana flourish through its best stretch of the season, winning six of its last seven matches. Within that span, Indiana has allowed just three goals and has shutout its opponents over the last 390 minutes of play. Last week, redshirt junior defender Daniel Munie was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his role in clean sheets against Omaha and Trine.
In all, Indiana men's soccer student-athletes have earned four Big Ten Player of the Week distinctions. Alongside Celentano, Munie has earned two and freshman Tommy Mihalic received the offensive award on August 31.
Celentano and the Hoosiers are back in action Wednesday (Oct. 20) night as they welcome non-conference opponent Evansville to Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
