BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The National Basketball Association is celebrating its 75th anniversary all season long during 2021-22, and part of that celebration includes the unveiling of the list of the 75 greatest players in NBA history.
The NBA's 75th anniversary team was selected by a blue-ribbon panel of media, current and former players, coaches, general managers and team executives.
Former Indiana All-American Isiah Thomas was selected as one of the players as announced on Thursday, Oct. 20. He was also named to the NBA's Top-50 players during the 1996 season, the 50th year of the NBA.
During his 13-year NBA career, Thomas averaged 19.2 points, 9.3 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game for the Detroit Pistons. He made 12 All-Star games, collected five All-NBA selections, was twice named the All-Star Game MVP, won two NBA Championships, secured the 1990 Finals MVP and was the 1984-85 assists champ.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft was elected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000, seven years after being inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.
During his two-year run at Indiana, Thomas led the Hoosiers to the 1981 NCAA Championship. He started all 63 collegiate games and averaged 15.4 points, 5.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per contest. He collected All-America honors as a sophomore before declaring for the NBA Draft week after being named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player.
