BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Field Hockey freshman midfielder Kira Curland was named the Big Ten Conference's Freshman of the Week Tuesday for her performances in wins against St. Louis and Ohio over the weekend.

The Sickte, Germany native was instrumental in IU's 7-1 thrashing of St. Louis on Friday afternoon. She scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the Hoosiers a 3-1 lead in the second period. Curland assisted on three different goals as well, tying a program record for most assists (3) by one player in a single game.

On Sunday afternoon, Curland recorded her sixth assist of the season on IU's third goal of the afternoon in the Hoosiers' 3-0 win over Ohio.

Curland is tied or in full control of all three major statistical categories among freshmen in the Big Ten. She is tied-1st in Goals (7), tied-1st in Assists (6) and 1st in Points (20) among first-year players in the conference.

Her seven goals are the most goals by a freshman at IU since Frederique Meeuwsen scored 10 in 2004. Curland is also tied for sixth nationally in points by a freshman.

Curland helped IU secure its first 10-win season since 2012 and a bid in next week's Big Ten Tournament in Piscataway, N.J.

She becomes IU's first Big Ten Weekly Honoree since Maddie Latino won Offensive Player of the Week on September 11, 2017. It's IU's first Freshman of the Week winner since Noelle Rother won the award on November 3, 2015.

IU closes out the regular season on Sunday, October 31st with an important conference battle against Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
