BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team added elite talent as IU head coach Shonda Stanton announced the addition of first base/utility player Sarah Stone to the Hoosiers roster. Stone transferred from the University of Kentucky and will be eligible to compete in the spring.
"I am excited to be back home in Indiana and am overwhelmed by the welcoming spirit of Hoosier Nation," Stone said. "I am excited to build relationships with my new teammates, coaches, and classmates. I am so happy to be welcomed back into my home state of Indiana to play the game that I love. Go Hoosiers!"
Stone, an NFCA high school 1st Team All-American and native of Bedford, Indiana who was ranked the No. 17 overall player in the 2021 class was also ranked as the No. 9 catcher in the country winning the Johnny Bench Award honoring the top high school catchers from the region.
Stone played high school softball at Bedford North Lawrence. She racked up the awards as a 3X All-State Selection, All Hoosiers Hills Conference honoree, All-Region Performer and Indiana All-Star. In addition to her success at BNL, Sarah excelled with the Beverly Bandits Demarini Travel Organization and was named a PGF All-American with top rankings by FloSoftball and Extra Inning Softball.
Stone registered 131 career home runs between high school and travel ball. She set Bedford North Lawrence records for highest career batting average (.540), single season batting average (.603), most career RBIs (125) and most home runs in a single season (17). She had 10 doubles, 17 triples, 49 RBI and 47 runs scored. She slugged 1.264, drew 33 walks and reached base at a .633 clip. Stone posted a .992 fielding percentage in 263 chances.
"We are super proud to welcome Sarah home," Stanton said. "She is a true slugger with one of the most explosive and consistent bats in the class of 2021. Her presence will be felt immediately in our line-up with the ability to change the game in one powerful swing. She is an elite ballplayer, and we cannot wait to have her wearing the Indiana script. With the exciting start to fall ball and the trajectory of our program, this addition simply quickens our rise. Exceptional student-athletes should be taking a good, hard look at what Indiana University, Bloomington and what the Hoosiers have to offer. This is a special place."
