Cardaño-Hillary Leads No. 8/7 Indiana Past Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – Graduate student guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary led all scorers with 29 points as she went 7-for-8 from the 3-point line to lead No. 8/7 Indiana over Butler, 86-63, in the season opener at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

KEY MOMENTS
- Five points from junior forward Mackenzie Holmes paced the Hoosiers in the opening quarter as it took a 17-13 lead. Butler took a brief lead in the early minutes of the second quarter but Cardaño-Hillary countered with a 3-pointer that swung the game back in favor of IU.
- It stretched its lead to six with a wide-open layup from Cardaño-Hillary with 6:32 to play. The Bulldogs, however, cut the deficit back down to two-points just a minute later but a 12-0 run gave IU a 36-24 lead.
- They would take a 43-32 lead into the break behind double figures from Cardaño-Hillary (10) and Berger (12).
- Cardaño-Hillary's third triple of the day pushed the Indiana lead to 48-35 with 7:56 on the clock in the third quarter as Butler fought back to cut the deficit to single digits. Answering the bell, Gulbe hit a pair at the line while Cardaño-Hillary added another 3-pointer while graduate student guard Ali Patberg pulled up to put her team up 15.
- The Hoosiers would cap off the win by outscoring Butler, 26-17, in the fourth quarter.
NOTABLE
- Cardaño-Hillary led all scorers with 29 points as she set a new personal IU record. She went 10-for-11 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the 3-point line. Her 7 triples ties for third place in a single game in program history.
- She paced four players in double figures as Berger added 18, junior forward Mackenzie Holmes adding 11 and sophomore forward Kiandra Browne adding 10 points off the bench.
- Berger became the 29th player in school history to record 1,000 career points on Wednesday night.
- The Hoosiers now have two active 1,000 point scorers on their roster as Berger joins Patberg (1,374).
- Indiana improved to 8-1 all-time in the series and increased its win streak to four games over the Bulldogs.
- Patberg recorded her 34th game with five assist or more as she recorded 10 assists. It marked fourth career-game with 10 or more assists.
- Holmes led the way with eight rebounds as the Hoosiers won on the boards, 32-24.
- Holmes hit her first career 3-pointer to open up scoring for the 2021-22 season.
- Indiana shot 52.2 percent from the floor on the evening (35-for-67) and dished out 24 assists.
- As a team, it also went 8-for-8 from the free throw line and had just nine turnovers while forcing Butler into 18 miscues on the evening.
- In season openers, IU improved to 38-12 all-time and win its regular season opener for the 10-straight season.
