NOTES: Indiana Opens Hoosier Classic Against Louisiana

OPENING TIP
Indiana University begins its 122nd season of competition in men's basketball and will host Louisiana in the first of three games in the Hoosier Classic. IU also will face Jackson State and Marshall at home over a six-day span. The Hoosiers improved to 3-0 on the season after beating St. John's, 76-74, in the Gavitt Tipoff games on Wednesday. The Ragin' Cajuns are 3-0 after beating Xavier (La.), 84-72, also on Wednesday. In a charity exhibition game, the Ragin' Cajuns fell to Alabama, 63-58. This is the first meeting between the teams and the Hoosiers are 9-0 against Sun Belt Conference foes.

IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Dan Dakich served as interim coach for seven games at the end of the 2008 season. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points. His 19.8 ppg. average is tied for second among players who spent four years in Bloomington.
Coach Bob Marlin is in his 12th year at Louisiana. He is 207-131 in 11-plus seasons and went 17-9 a season ago.
JACKSON-DAVIS NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior/sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, the leading returning scorer in the Big Ten, has been named a first-team 2021-22 Preseason All-American by the Associated Press, and selected to the watch list for the Karl Malone Watch, the NABC Player of the Year, Wooden Award and Naismith Award. He was a third-team All-American (Sporting News) last season. He started all 27 games in 2020-21 and was the only high major player to average at least 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds. He led the Hoosiers with 21 points, 14 boards and 3 blocked shots against EMU. This was Jackson-Davis 23rd career double-double. He finished with 19 points, 7 boards and 7 blocks against NIU and earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors on November 16. It was the third time in his career that he has been named B1G Player of the Week. Against St. John's, he finished with 18 points, 10 boards and 2 blocks posting his 24th career double-double. IU is 19-5 when he records a double-double.
Jackson-Davis became the 54th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark against the Red Storm and now has scored 1,007 points as a Hoosier.
ODDS AND TRENDS
IU's starting lineup of Jackson-Davis (62), Sr./Jr's. Xavier Johnson (84), Miller Kopp (77), Parker Stewart (77) and Race Thompson (30) have combined for 330 career Division I starts. Off the bench, Sr./Jr's. Michael Durr (85) and Rob Phinisee have started 154 games combined.
The Hoosiers are just outside the Top-25, receiving the 27th most votes in the AP Poll and 30th most votes in the coaches poll.
Thompson's floater in the lane with 25 seconds left and Johnson's free throw with 8 seconds remaining proved to be critical in the win against St. John's. After the Red Storm tied the game at 56-56 with 8:49 to go, second-year players forward Jordan Geronimo hit a triple, guard Khristian Lander had a fast break basket and Geronimo followed with a second jumper to give IU a 7-point lead with 6:06 on the clock. Geronimo also provided defense on St. John's game-winning shot attempt at the buzzer.
In the first half of the first three games, the IU defense is allowing 22 points on 26.6% shooting from the field, 24.1% from 3-point range and forcing an average of 9 turnovers, while adding 4.4 blocks. In 240 minutes of play, including 3 exhibition games, IU has trailed for just 1:48 and closed out two games (EMU and SJU) in which it held a 1-point lead in the final 2 minutes after holding a double-digit lead.
