OPENING TIP
Indiana University begins its 122nd season of competition in men's basketball and will host Jackson State in the second of three games in the Hoosier Classic. IU defeated Louisiana, 76-44, and Marshall topped Jackson State, 80-64, on Sunday. IU will host Marshall on Saturday at 7 p.m. This is the first meeting against Jackson State and the Hoosiers are 7-0 all-time against the SWAC.

IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Dan Dakich served as interim coach for seven games at the end of the 2008 season. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points. His 19.8 ppg. average is tied for second among players who spent four years in Bloomington.
Coach Wayne Brent is in his ninth year at JSU. they tied for the SWAC title a year ago with an 11-0 record.
DOING IT WITH DEFENSE
As of Monday (Nov. 22), IU led the nation in defensive three-point field goal percentage at 30.3%. The Hoosiers set a school record on Sunday when they defended 25 straight Louisiana shots without a make in the first half. The Hoosiers 19.2% defensive effort from the field was the lowest shooting total the Hoosiers have allowed in recent years. Rutgers shot 24.1% against IU at home in 2018.
ALL-AMERICAN TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS
Junior/sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, the leading returning scorer in the Big Ten, has been named a first-team 2021-22 Preseason All-American by the Associated Press, and selected to the watch list for the Karl Malone Watch, the NABC Player of the Year, Wooden Award and Naismith Award. He was a third-team All-American (Sporting News) last season. He started all 27 games in 2020-21 and was the only high major player to average at least 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds. The Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 15 is averaging 17.3 points and 9.5 rebounds, while shooting 60.5% from the floor. He has had two double-doubles this season and 24 in his career with IU posting a 19-5 record in those games.
Jackson-Davis became the 54th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark against St. John's and now has scored 1,018 points as a Hoosier, rating 53rd all-time in IU lore.
ODDS AND TRENDS
IU's starting lineup of Jackson-Davis (63), Sr./Jr's. Xavier Johnson (85), Miller Kopp (78), Parker Stewart (78) and Race Thompson (31) have combined for 335 career Division I starts. Off the bench, Sr./Jr's. Michael Durr (85) and Rob Phinisee have started 154 games. The Hoosiers are just outside the Top-25, receiving the 30th most votes in the AP Poll and 32nd most in the Coaches Poll.
In the first half, the IU defense is allowing 20 points on 22.1% shooting from the field, 20.5% from 3-point range and forcing an average of 8.9 turnovers while committing 4.8 blocks.
In 280 minutes of play, including three exhibition games, IU has trailed for just 1:48 and closed out two games (EMU and SJU) in which it held a 1-point lead in the final two minutes after holding a double-digit lead.
The Hoosiers hit a season-high 10 triples against the Ragin' Cajuns led by Stewart who hit 4-of-5 and finished with a team-high 16 points. Six different players made long distance calls.
Sophomore/Freshman Khristian Lander tallied a season-high 9 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. His rebounds and assists were career-highs as were his 24 minutes.
