SEATTLE – Indiana men's soccer (15-6-1, 5-3-0 B1G) gave No. 2 overall seed Washington (16-1-2, 6-1-2 Pac 12) all it could handle, but a 97th minute golden goal allowed the Huskies to steal a 3-2 victory in the NCAA Tournament Third Round Saturday (Nov. 27) at Husky Soccer Stadium.
IU took 1-0 and 2-1 leads, through Victor Bezerra in the first half and Spencer Glass in the second, respectively, but Washington's Dylan Teves rescued the Huskies each time. The junior midfielder completed his hat trick in the 97th minute to capture the win.
"I want to congratulate Washington," IU head men's soccer coach Todd Yeagley said. "They're a good program [that is] well-coached.
"I thought our guys left everything on the field. [There were] maybe a few more plays that we had in us that fell a little short, but I was proud of the effort of our guys."
With the defeat, Indiana's season concludes after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the 35th straight season. IU is one of two programs to reach the Sweet 16 in each of the last seven seasons.
KEY MOMENTS
• In the 28th minute, Bezerra dribbled around a defender to put himself in a dangerous position on goal but was taken down in the box, earning a penalty. Bezerra blasted home from the spot and opened the scoring.
• IU took its lead into the half as rain began to fall at Husky Soccer Stadium. It would continue to come down throughout the remainder of the contest.
• The Huskies equalized three minutes into the second 45 on another penalty call as Joey Maher was called for the foul. IU goalkeeper Roman Celentano guessed the right direction on Teves' attempt but dove too low for the sailing shot.
• In the 53rd minute, Indiana retook the lead. In transition, IU switched the field from the right flank as Joe Schmidt found Ryan Wittenbrink coming down the left wing. Wittenbrink connected with Glass on an overlapping run, and the senior's shot scorched through the goalkeeper at the near post.
• Indiana withheld Husky attacking pressure until the 75th minute when a Lucas Meek cross found the head of Teves at the back post for the second equalizer.
• In the 97th minute, Dylan Teves fired a laser from distance that found the side netting and ended the match.
NOTABLES
• Indiana's 2021 season concludes after making its 35th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 46th appearance all-time.
• Victor Bezerra and Spencer Glass each scored in back-to-back matches.
• Bezerra deposited his team-best eighth goal of the season. The junior has scored 28 goals in his career.
