Kira Curland Earns All-Big Ten Honors, Jes McGivern Named Sportsmanship Award Honoree

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced its postseason Field Hockey honors on Wednesday afternoon. After a 10-9 regular season, capped off by earning the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, IU saw two players named in the conference's recognition.
 
Freshman midfielder Kira Curland was named Second Team All-Big Ten in a selection by the conference's coaches. The Sickte, Germany had a fantastic freshman campaign in Bloomington. She paced IU's offensive attack with seven goals (1st), six assists (T-1st) and 20 points (1st).
 
Curland finished the regular season among the leaders for freshman in the conference. She was second in goals (7), tied for first in assists (6) with fellow IU first-year midfielder Sofia Arrebola Garcia and first in points (20).
 
She becomes IU's first All-Big Ten honoree since current senior Hailey Couch was named 2nd-Team All-Big Ten in 2019.
 
Curland's seven goals are the most goals by a freshman at IU since Frederique Meeuwsen scored 10 in 2004.
 
Senior midfielder Jes McGivern was named one of nine Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honorees. Over her four years in Bloomington, McGivern has made 64 appearances, 42 starts and recorded an assist.
 
The West Deptford, N.J.-native has served as IU's captain in the second half of the season and has had a profound impact on IU's field hockey program.
 
IU continues its season in the 2021 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The 7th-seeded Hoosiers will take on host and 2nd-seeded Rutgers on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. EST. The winner is set to face the winner of Maryland/Penn State on Friday afternoon in a semifinal clash.
