BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Another regular season complete, another huge haul of Big Ten postseason awards for Indiana men's soccer.
With two specialty award winners, eight Indiana student-athletes combined for a league-best tying 10 Big Ten postseason honors as announced by the conference office on Friday (Nov. 5).
Junior Roman Celentano is the first-ever two-time Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, earning the award in back-to-back seasons. An Indiana goalie has claimed the award in three of the last four years as Trey Muse received the honor following the 2018 season.
Junior Daniel Munie is the fourth Hoosier in the last five seasons to earn the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Award, following Grant Lillard (2017), Andrew Gutman (2018) and Jack Maher (2019).
Celentano and Munie have led one of the top defenses in the nation, recording 10 clean sheets on the year. In October, Indiana shut out seven straight opponents, the second longest single-season streak in program history. During that span, the Hoosiers did not concede a goal in 725 consecutive minutes of play.
Indiana has earned multiple Big Ten specialty awards in each of the last five seasons, totaling 14 conference player of the year and coach of the year honors since 2017. A specialty award has arrived in Bloomington in each of the last 12 seasons.
With its 2021 count, Indiana has totaled 115 All-Big Ten first team selections all-time, 55 more than the next best program (Penn State, 60). Alongside Munie and Celentano's first-team selections, three Hoosiers were named to the All-Big Ten second team: junior forwards Victor Bezerra and Herbert Endeley and redshirt senior defender Spencer Glass.
All three second teamers each earned their third-career Big Ten postseason awards. Last season, Bezerra was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year which also saved him a first-team spot. Endeley was a second team pick following the 2020-21 regular season as well and was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2019. Glass took home first team laurels in 2020-21 and a second team pick in 2019.
Bezerra is once again putting out fine offensive numbers, sharing the team-high in goals (6), and leading IU in assists (5) and points (17). Of his six goals, five gave Indiana a lead and four were match winners.
Endeley has started 11 of 17 matches for Indiana, contributing two goals, including the match-winner against Northwestern on September 21, and four assists that tie for the second-most on the team.
Glass been another key member of the Indiana defense from his left back position, starting 15 of 16 matches played. A leader on the pitch, in the classroom and in the community, Glass is one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. Unlimited fan voting is available until November 22 here.
Completing IU's All-Big Ten haul, forwards Tommy Mihalic and Samuel Sarver were named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Mihalic was a unanimous selection.
Starting 16 of 17 matches this season, Mihalic has scored five goals in his first season with one assist. Two of his goals have come as match winners, including a golden goal against Wisconsin on October 24. The Skokie, Illinois, native was the season's inaugural Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on August 31 after his brace against Notre Dame (Aug. 27) led to a 3-2 season-opening, overtime win.
Sarver sits tied with Bezerra for the team-lead in goals (6) and has contributed four assists during his rookie campaign. A Chesterland, Ohio, native, Sarver has scored twice in multiple matches.
Mihalic and Sarver rank No. 19 and No. 77, respectively, on the Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 Freshmen list.
Rounding out Friday's awards, sophomore Joey Maher was one of nine recipients of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Maher has been a crucial piece of the IU defense, forming a center back pairing with Munie that has started all 17 matches. It's Maher second-career Big Ten postseason award after he was named to the freshman team last season.
