BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Samuel Sarver's 27th minute strike was enough to give Indiana men's soccer (13-4-1, 5-3-0 B1G) a 1-0 victory over Rutgers (9-6-2, 3-4-1 B1G) in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday (Nov. 7) afternoon on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the win, No. 3 seed Indiana advances to and will host the semifinal round against No. 7 seed Northwestern on Wednesday (Nov. 10). Kickoff time will either be set for noon or 2 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
KEY MOMENTS
• Into the 24th minute, a poor tap-in attempt by Rutgers allowed IU goalkeeper Roman Celentano to start a counter, throwing the ball out to the right flank. Samuel Sarver broke forward with pace, passed across the top of the box to Tommy Mihalic, who found Spencer Glass with space coming down the left wing. Glass took first time with pace, but his attempt was saved by RU keeper Oren Asher. After a clearance, Glass played a cross that sailed over Sarver at the back post. Sarver was taken down in the scramble, but the play resulted in a goal kick.
• Three minutes later, Sarver put his name on the scoresheet. Daniel Munie took the ball near midfield and played a long ground pass to Endeley up the pitch. Endeley dribbled through space then released a through ball to Sarver, who made a clever vertical run off his marker. With just the keeper to beat, the freshman struck it low with pace, off the far post and in.
• Rutgers searched for an equalizer but couldn't truly unlock the Indiana defense that allowed just four shots, one on target, in the final 45 minutes of play. The Scarlet Knights attempted two shots in the last 10 minutes, but neither were quality chances.
NOTABLES
• Indiana earned its seventh straight victory at Bill Armstrong Stadium, improving its home record to 9-3-0 on the season.
• The Hoosiers have won 10 consecutive matches, including ties broken by penalty kicks, in the Big Ten Tournament going back to 2018. IU has reached the semifinal round in every tournament since 2013.
• IU collected its 11th clean sheet of the season and No. 8 in its last nine matches. After opening Big Ten Conference play with a 2-1 defeat to Rutgers, the Hoosiers have conceded just five goals in 13 matches.
• Sarver scored his seventh goal of the season to take over the team lead. The All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection has scored three goals in his last three matches.
• Playing the final ball to Sarver's goal, Endeley collected his third assist in as many matches.
