Berger and Patberg Earn Spots On Wade Watch List
11/9/2021 11:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Last season, Berger was nation's leader in triple doubles while averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and shooting 44.1 percent from the floor. Berger earned WBCA and USWBA All-American honorable mention honors and was also an All-Big Ten first team selection. She scored in double figures 23 times as a junior including seven games scoring 20 points or more. The Louisville, Ky. native and 2021-22 preseason All-Big Ten honoree and 2022 Cheryl Miller Award preseason watch list candidate looks to be the 29th member of IU's 1,000-point club as she enters the 2021-22 season with 996 career points.
Patberg is a two-time Lieberman Award Top 10 finalist (2020 & 2021) and returns for her seventh and final season of college eligibility. Last season, the Columbus, Ind. native averaged 14.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and held a +2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. She was named an All-Big Ten second team honoree last season in addition to appearing on the Jersey Mikes Naismith Trophy top 50, Wade Trophy watchlist and Wooden Award watch list in 2021-22.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 45th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001. A full third of the list — 10 players — comes from Big Ten Conference institutions.
The No. 8/7 Indiana Hoosiers open up the 2021-22 regular season on Wednesday night at Butler. Tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m. ET.
