BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Three Indiana men's soccer student-athletes were named Top Drawer Soccer Best XI selections, the publication announced Tuesday (Dec. 21).
IU's All-America pair of junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano and redshirt junior defender Daniel Munie were picked first and second team, respectively, while forward Tommy Mihalic earned a freshman second team selection.
As the first team goalkeeper, Celentano was the highest rated in his position. This fall, Celentano became the first-ever repeat Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, earning the award in back-to-back seasons. His 11 solo shutouts ranked No. 3 in the country and No. 1 in the conference.
Among the NCAA's active leaders Celentano ranks No. 1 in goals allowed average (0.62), No. 2 in save percentage (0.831) and tied for No. 3 in shutouts (28) after three masterful seasons in cream and crimson. He owns a 37-10-5 record and has conceded just 33 goals over 52 matches.
Celentano's All-America partnership with Daniel Munie let Indiana become one of the nation's top defenses that tallied 13 shutouts as a team. In October, IU shut out seven straight opponents, the second-longest single-season streak in program history.
Munie was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts as well as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week three times. While keeping opponents off the scoresheet, Munie also tallied three goals and three assists.
Mihalic was a unanimous All-Big Ten Freshman team selection, as well as the season's first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The Skokie, Illinois, native collected five goals, two match-winners and an assist during his rookie season.
Mihalic burst on the scene by scoring a brace in his first collegiate match, a 3-2 OT win at Notre Dame. Maybe Mihalic's biggest moment came October 24, when, after 106 scoreless minutes between IU and Wisconsin, the freshman buried the golden goal to give the Hoosiers a crucial conference victory.
