BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Three legendary Indiana swimming and diving coaches were named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's list of 100 Greatest Coaches, the CSCAA announced Tuesday (Dec. 7).
Hobie Billingsley, James "Doc" Counsilman and current IU swimming head coach Ray Looze each earned a selection. Per the CSCAA, the list seeks "to recognize the most successful and pioneering swimming and diving coaches" based on their intercollegiate success.
Now in his 20th season mentoring athletes at Indiana University, Looze is a 10-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and was named the CSCAA National Swimming Coach of the Year in 2018. His swimmers have totaled 19 individual national titles during his tenure at IU.
Billingsley spent 31 seasons as the head coach for Indiana diving, where he led student-athletes to 15 individual NCAA Championships and 23 Big Ten individual titles. His pupils include Ken Sitzberger (1965-67) and Jim Henry (1968-70), both among the CSCAA's list of 100 Greatest Swimmers and Divers of the Past 100 Years.
Alongside Billingsley, Counsilman led Indiana from 1959-90 as he helped orchestrate a streak of six straight national championships from 1968-1973. At IU, Counsilman coached a long list of swimming greats including Gary Hall, Charlie Hickcox, John Kinsella and Mark Spitz.
