BLOOMINGTON, Ind.— The Big Ten Conference announced their Big Ten Indoor Track & Field season honors on Wednesday night. Rikkoi Brathwaite of Indiana Track & Field was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year.
The last Indiana athlete named Big Ten Athlete of the Year was Sydney Clute (outdoor) and Katherine Receveur (cross country) who earned this accolade in 2017. This is the first time since 2013 that the Hoosier men have seen someone honored as Big Ten Athlete of the Year. Derek Drouin was named the indoor and outdoor athlete of the year in 2013.
Brathwaite finished up his junior indoor season at NCAA Indoor Championships this past weekend where he picked up bronze in the 60m with a time of 6.56. He had the second-fastest semifinal time headed into the final. Brathwaite wrapped up his time at the championships by garnering first team All-American accolades.
At Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, Brathwaite ran a personal best 6.55 in the final and was Crowned champion of the 60m. His time was the ninth fastest in the world this year and tied the Big Ten All-Time record.
Heading into the postseason, Rikkoi hadn't seen any place other than first in the 60m. He had wins at Simmons-Harvey Invitational, Gladstein Invitational, Hoosier Hills, and the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Invitational.
