
Hoosiers Take Down Purdue, 9-4, to Win Series

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University baseball team clinched the series with Purdue on Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 victory at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Ind.
With the win, the Hoosiers improve to 9-2 on the season overall and in Big Ten conference play. The Boilermakers fall to 2-9 on the year and in league action.
KEY MOMENTS
• Trailing 2-0, in the bottom of the second inning, INF Jeremy Houston tied the game with a clutch, two-out hit. With the bases loaded, Houston slapped a 3-2 offering through the left side of the infield for a two-run single.
• OF Grant Richardson gave the Hoosiers the lead in the third inning with a towering, solo home run to center field. Richardson's bomb was his team-leading third of the season. INF Jordan Fucci added to the advantage with a RBI single up the middle, which was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of DH Kip Fougerousse to make the IU lead 5-2.
• After Purdue cut the advantage to 5-4, OF Morgan Colopy made the Hoosier lead two with a sacrifice fly to right field.
• In the bottom of the eighth, C Collin Hopkins doubled the IU advantage to 8-4, cranking a two-run homer over the left field fence. The long ball was the first for Hopkins as a Hoosier.
• Richardson added another insurance run for IU in the eighth, plating a run with a bloop single to left center, scoring OF Drew Ashley.
NOTABLES
• RHP Gabe Bierman (1-1) earned the win for the Hoosiers, pitching six innings, allowing four runs, three earned with seven strikeouts.
• LHP Ty Bothwell pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out three.
• RHP Matt Litwicki tossed a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
• Ashley extended his on-base streak to 36-games dating back to the 2019 season.
• Ashley and INF Paul Toetz have at least one hit in all 11 games this season for the Hoosiers.
• Indiana's 9-2 start in Big Ten play is the best for the team since starting 11-2 in league action in 2016.
• Indiana had a season-high nine runs and 14 hits in the win.
