Celentano, Wittenbrink Named Co-Big Ten Players of the Week
3/30/2021 2:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Roman Celentano and redshirt sophomore forward Ryan Wittenbrink were named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player and Co-Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Celentano has earned the accolade from the Big Ten four times in his career, including each of the last three weeks. For Wittenbrink, this is the first honor of his career.
In goal, the Naperville, Ill., native recorded a total of six saves across 191 minutes of shutout soccer in victories over Northwestern (3-0) and No. 11 Michigan (1-0 2OT). In 730 minutes of action this season, Celentano has conceded just two goals (0.246 goals allowed per game), the lowest figure in the Big Ten Conference. His 29 saves are tops in the league, along with his 93.5% save percentage. His six shutouts double the next closest keeper in the conference.
Wittenbrink was golden in Indiana's dramatic 1-0 victory over the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon. He took a restart pass from sophomore forward Victor Bezerra, beat the Michigan defender in a one-on-one situation, and ripped a shot to beat the keeper in the 101st minute to secure the fifth-straight Hoosier victory. The Libertyville, Ill., native has scored three goals this season.
Celentano, Wittenbrink and the rest of the No. 5-ranked Hoosier men's soccer team hosts the Maryland Terrapins to close out the 2020-21 regular season at 1 p.m. ET on April 4 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The match will be broadcast on BTN.
