
Indiana Finishes Opening Weekend with 8-1 Win Over Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Indiana University baseball team finished the opening weekend of the 2021 season with a third-straight win, defeating the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 8-1, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. on Sunday night.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 3-1 on the season, while Minnesota falls to 1-3.
KEY MOMENTS
• In his first career start, LHP Ty Bothwell (1-0) was terrific, setting career-bests with 10 strikeouts in five innings pitched to earn the win. He allowed just one earned run on two hits.
• After a two-out double from INF Cole Barr, INF Paul Toetz blasted a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Hoosiers a lead in the top of the first inning.
• In the top of the third, OF Grant Richardson doubled off the wall in right-center field on an 0-2 offering to push the Hoosiers' lead to 3-0.
• The Hoosier played add-on in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout from Toetz and a run-scoring single off the bat of INF Jordan Fucci.
• DH Drew Ashley hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot, over the fence in left field in the top of the seventh. Later in the frame, PH Tyler Van Pelt plated a run with an RBI infield single to push the IU advantage to 7-1.
• In the top of the ninth, INF Jordan Fucci doubled high off the wall in right field to score another run.
NOTABLES
• Ashley extended his on-base streak to 29-games dating back to the 2019 season.
• In his season debut, RHP Nathan Stahl pitched three shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits, while striking out four.
• Richardson finished the game 3-for-5 with three doubles, one RBI and two runs scored.
• RHP Matt Litwicki pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
• On the weekend, the Hoosier pitching staff posted an ERA of 1.80, striking out 50 in 35 innings pitched and allowed just seven runs on 15 hits.
• Toetz's homer in the first inning was the first of his career.
• In his first collegiate game and start, OF Bobby Whalen tallied his first career hit with an infield single in the eighth inning.
