
IUFH Comes Up Short to Michigan State, 4-2

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Indiana Field Hockey (1-14, 1-14 Big Ten) helped kick off the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament on Tuesday afternoon by going up against Michigan State (2-13, 2-13 Big Ten). Despite getting goals from Kennedy Reardon and Mary Kate Kesler, the Hoosiers came up short, 4-2.
KEY MOMENTS
• The Spartans struck first as they scored the single goal in the first 15 minutes of action. They would take the 1-0 lead through the frame.
• Sophie Giltrap found Meghan Dillon in the left half of the circle who fired off a rocket shot but it went wide of the cage to start the second quarter.
• After the ball hit an Indiana defender, Michigan State was awarded a penalty stroke that found the back of the cage. The Spartans took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
• In the third quarter, Indiana earned its second penalty corner of the contest. Emma Martin inserted the ball to Meghan Dillon who trapped it. Mary Kate Kesler then flicked the ball over to Kennedy Reardon who got it to go past the Michigan State goalkeeper.
• The Spartans answered with a goal of their own to make it 3-1 in the closing minutes of the third quarter.
• The Hoosiers had an opportunity to inch closer to Michigan State in the final 24 seconds of the fourth quarter when they were rewarded with their third penalty corner. Mary Kate Kesler was able to fire off a shot that made it in goal but was called off due to the shot being too high.
• Earning their second penalty stroke of the game in the fourth frame. With a Michigan State shooter looking for a hat trick, Sachi Ananias denied the shot to keep the game 3-1.
• With another penalty stroke for the Spartans, they were able to capitalize and make the score 4-1.
• Not going down without a fight, Kesler got a look that snuck past the goalkeeper to cut into the lead, 4-2.
• Indiana applied the pressure in the closing minutes, but it wasn't enough as Michigan State won the contest.

• Brinley Foster was awarded with the start which was the first of her young career.
• Kennedy Reardon scored her first goal of the season in the third quarter. It was the second of Reardon's career.

• Six different Hoosiers took shots in Tuesday's contest, including Anna Gwiazdzinski had a team high four shots.
