No. 13 Indiana Drops Matchup with No. 4 California

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 13-ranked Indiana University water polo team couldn't overcome a strong offensive start by No. 4 California, dropping a 12-10 match on Saturday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
 
With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 9-14 and to 1-10 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play. The Golden Bears move to 10-6 on the year and 4-6 in MPSF action.
 
KEY MOMENTS
• Junior Tina Doherty opened the scoring for IU on a powerplay goal with 3:13 left in the first period.
• After a 4-0 run from California, sophomore Zoe Crouch put the ball in the back of the net to get IU back on the board in the second period.
• Just moments later, Crouch added her second of the afternoon on a penalty shot to bring IU within 6-3.
• Doherty's last-minute chance before the half beat the goalie but couldn't find the back of the net after hitting off the post.
• IU grabbed the opening goal of the second half thanks to sophomore Katherine Hawkins who scored to bring the Hoosiers within three.
• After IU's 30-second timeout, sophomore Lanna Debow grabbed an even-strength goal to cut the California lead to just two goals.
• Right before the end of the third quarter, junior Izzy Mandema grabbed one back to halt the late California offensive surge.
• IU won a penalty early in the fourth period and Doherty converted calmly from the spot.
• Doherty completed her hat-trick with 4:18 left in the fourth period and then scored a fourth just minutes later.
