#IUMS Finishes Season as National Runner Up
CARY, N.C. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana men's soccer team (12-2-2) lost a closely contested matchup to No. 10 Marshall (13-2-3) 1-0 in extra time of the 2020 NCAA Men's Soccer National Championship at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Monday night.
KEY MOMENTS
• Sophomore forward Herbert Endeley had the first look at net for IU on the night. He made a long run through midfield before unleashing a shot that went wide of the net in the 15th minute.
• Sophomore forward Victor Bezerra made a brilliant run through the middle and picked up a pass from Endeley but couldn't get a shot on target in the 17th minute.
• Sophomore goalie Roman Celentano had his first true save of the night in the 18th minute when a strike from Marshall attacker Milo Yosef was comfortably met.
• Redshirt sophomore defender Daniel Munie nearly broke the deadlock when he jumped to head home a free kick from redshirt junior midfielder Joe Schmidt. Munie's attempt on net came off the woodwork and was cleared by the Marshall defense.
• Celentano was once again up to the challenge in the 23rd minute when his outstretched hands met a curling ball headed for the bottom corner. He was able to stop the ball's momentum and keep it from the back of the net.
• Endeley continued to find space in the middle of the park throughout the first half. He made another deep run in the 26th minute and his right-footed attempt went just left of the Marshall goal.
• Munie was in the right spot once again in the 42nd minute but his headed shot towards the net couldn't find the target.
• The two teams played a tense, back-and-forth 45 minutes but there was nothing to separate the sides at the break.
• Endeley earned a free kick in the 49th minute after taking on three Marshall defenders and going down just outside the 18-yard box.
• Celentano was quick to come off his line and make a save in the 56th minute. He dove to his left and corralled the Marshall shot.
• IU survived a flurry of Marshall chances in the final thirty minutes of regulation to force extra time in the 2020 National Championship.
• Celentano made a save late in the first overtime period but a deflection fell off the post and right in front of Marshall's Jamil Roberts who tapped in the winner.
NOTABLES
• IU finished the season 12-2-2 while achieving the Big Ten double for the third consecutive season.
