5/4/2021 4:05:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's soccer sophomore forward Victor Bezerra was named of 15 semifinalists for the 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy, United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday. The semifinalists were determined based on voting by NCAA DI soccer coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. For more information about the MAC Hermann Trophy, including a list of past winners, visit MACHermannTrophy.org.
In the long, storied history of the program, Indiana has had a player win the MAC Hermann trophy on eight occasions:
Angelo DiBernardo (1978)
Armando Betancourt (1981)
Ken Snow (1988)
Ken Snow (1990)
Todd Yeagley (1994)
Brian Maisonneuve (1994)
Danny O'Rourke (2004)
Andrew Gutman (2018)
Bezerra is enjoying a brilliant offensive season in the abbreviated 2020-21 spring campaign for Indiana. He has found the back of the net a team-best 12 times in 11 starts (12 games) this season. He has also chipped in three assists and a team-high 27 points. Bezerra has secured at least one goal or one assist in nine-straight matches and in 11-of-12 matches this season.
The Chicago native leads all Big Ten players in shots (44), shots on goal (24), goals (12), game-winning goals (4), and total points (27). Nationally, he ranks second in goals per game (1.00), tied for third in game-winning goals (4), and fourth in points per game (2.25).
His 12 goals this season are the most scored by a Hoosier since Eriq Zavaleta netted 18 tallies in 2012. Since 2006, only two Hoosiers have scored more goals than Bezerra in a single season: Will Bruin (18 in 2010) and Zavaleta (18 in 2012).
The Hoosier striker scored five goals in the three Big Ten Tournament matches, the most ever by a Hoosier in a single B1G tournament run. He has scored nine goals in his last six postseason matches, dating back to the opening game of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
Bezerra has tallied 20 goals in his two seasons at Indiana, the most for a second-year player since Zavaleta (28) from 2011-12.
Three men and three women finalists will be named for the award on May 12. The 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on May 27 to formally announce this year's winners.
The third-seeded, second-ranked Hoosiers will take on the No. 19-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles at 6 p.m. on May 6 at WakeMed Field in Cary, N.C. in the third round of the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament.
Tickets will not be available to the general public for the NCAA Tournament Third Round. A stream of the match can be found here.
