PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 23-ranked Indiana University baseball team won a dramatic, back-and-forth contest at Rutgers, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon in Piscataway, N.J.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 22-9 on the season overall and in Big Ten conference play. The Scarlet Knights fall to 17-15 on the year and in league action.
KEY MOMENTS
• Through the first six innings of Saturday's game, RHP McCade Brown was perfect. He retired the first 18 batters he faced in order, racking up 11 strikeouts.
• With both pitchers dealing, Indiana collected the team's first two hits of the game in the top of the seventh inning, as INF Paul Toetz and OF Grant Richardson both singled. After a walk to INF Cole Barr, the bases were loaded with no outs. IU was unable to get a run across, however, as a shallow fly ball, an infield fly and a strikeout ended the threat.
• Brown lost his perfect game in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff home run. Prior to that, the righty had struck out the seven previous batters.
• Brown allowed just the one hit, one earned run and struck out 11 while issuing three walks in seven innings of work.
• Down 1-0 in the top of the ninth, the Hoosiers were down to the team's last out with runners on first and second. C Collin Hopkins stepped to the dish and delivered yet another clutch hit for Indiana, lining an RBI single to center field to tie the game.
• In the top of the 10th inning, the Hoosiers had runners on second and third with one out for INF Jeremy Houston. The senior came through, hitting a 1-2 offering into centerfield to plate the go-ahead run.
• Richardson followed with an RBI groundout to the shortstop, giving IU a 3-1 lead headed to the bottom of the frame.
• The Scarlet Knights answered, however, plating two runs with a two-out single to tie the game at 3-3 after 10 complete.
• In the top of the 11th inning, INF Jordan Fucci had one of the best at-bats any Hoosier has had in 2021. During an eight-pitch battle, Fucci fouled off five-straight pitches before launching a go-ahead, two-run homer over the fence in center field. Fucci's third home run of the season gave Indiana a 5-3 lead.
• In the bottom of the inning, Rutgers was able to bring the tying run to the plate, but RHP Braydon Tucker earned his first career save with a strikeout to end the threat and clinch the win for IU.
