Below are partial transcriptions of Zoom press conferences with Indiana punter James Evans, offensive lineman Vinny Fiacable, offensive lineman Joshua Sales Jr., and wide receiver Jordyn Williams on Thursday, June 17.
P James Evans
Q. On replacing Haydon Whitehead…
EVANS: Haydon was a four-year starter and was consistent throughout. He was one of the best punters in the Big Ten. Since I have been here, he has been helpful to me. We have kicked balls together a few times and, in those sessions, he would give me advice. Everything from on the field to off the field, handling coaches, teammates, and the pressure, all that kind of stuff. Before I got here, if he was not so good, I would not be here, so I thank him for that. We talked on the phone a couple times, and I texted with him. I asked him what to expect before I got here. That has helped in my transition here, and I am fortunate to have him still in my life.
Q. On who you have gotten close to since being at Indiana…
EVANS: Charles Campbell and Sean Wracher have been helpful, obviously, since they are in the special teams group. They have helped with the transition, and I am good friends with them. They have helped me on and off the field, have given me advice at practice, in the weight room, dealing with coaches and teammates. They have also helped me with things to do in Bloomington. Spending time with them has helped me fit in here.
OL Vinny Fiacable
Q. On the adjustment to college…
FIACABLE: It was a big adjustment from Fort Wayne to Bloomington. It is a new setting. It is college football now, not high school. Getting to know the guys at first was tough because you are coming into a new environment. As of right now I have a lot of new friends, the offensive linemen are awesome. They are good guys.
Q. O what he has learned from a football standpoint in practice…
FIACABLE: The speed of the game was a huge adjustment. The overall mental aspect of the game was a learning curve for me. Just learning all the new plays and getting reps with them. I am still learning the playbook and still learning the plays. It is a big learning curve from high school to now college. Being locked in and focused at practice is what will help me throughout the summer.
OL Joshua Sales Jr.
Q. On spring ball...
SALES: Honestly this spring helped me out a lot. It helped me adjust to the speed of the game. We were kind of thrust into it. It made the jump a little bit rocky at first, but in the grand scheme of things it definitely helped out with my development.
Q. On the adjustment to the speed of college...
SALES: I think the most difficult part was just realizing that everybody is good to some extent. There's nobody that doesn't have skill, and everybody is here for a reason. Stuff you could get away with in high school, you definitely can't get away with at this level.
WR Jordyn Williams
Q. On the advantage of having spring ball…
WILLIAMS: It really put me ahead of the ball. I could tell from the freshmen that are just now coming in, I'm ahead of them. It just put me ahead of the curve and put me ahead of the game of where I'm supposed to be and where coaches want me to be for the season.
Q. On handling the step up in level...
WILLIAMS: One thing my pops always told me was "100 yards is 100 yards". Wherever I go, as long as I have a football in my hands, I'm going to make a way with it.
P James Evans
