BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball head coach Shonda Stanton has announced the addition of Cora Bassett to the program.
Bassett, a native of Newburgh, Ind., comes to the Hoosiers after two seasons at Purdue. This past season Bassett was selected Second Team All-Big Ten.
"Cora is an incredible athlete with a solid combination of speed and power," Stanton said. "We believe she has the tools to excel in our offensive system as well as provide a gritty and sure handed glove defensively with the ability to play multiple positions. It has been our pleasure getting to know Cora. She has the character, drive and passion to fit in well with Team 49. We are proud she has decided to wear the Indiana script."
"I've always dreamed of playing for Indiana and representing my home state," Bassett said. "Coach Stanton, Coach Fearn, and Coach Bell are remarkable women and I know that I will not only grow as a player, but as a person with these coaches. This team is bound for greatness and after talking to the players and coaches, I knew I had to be apart of it!"
In the 2021 season Bassett started all 32 games she appeared in. After 103 at-bats, the sophomore secured 15 runs on 32 hits and nine walks. Not only did Bassett produce a .311 batting average, but she tallied 22 RBI and 10 doubles. Bassett amassed a six consecutive game hitting streak, reached base in eight straight games, and recorded eight multi-hit games over the season.
Coming out of high school at Castle, Bassett was ranked No. 63 nationally in the 2019 class. She helped her travel team win the 14U USFA National Championship.
"Coming in as a transfer I hope to bring the experiences I've had at playing in the Big Ten already this past year," Bassett said. "This team is competitive with a refuse to lose mentality that I believe I can add on to. I'm grateful for this opportunity and I'm excited to be apart of this team!"
