BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball senior Gabbi Jenkins and Indiana track and field senior Logan Targgart have been chosen as Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship honorees the conference announced today.
The Big Ten announced on Wednesday the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners and were chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.
Jenkins finished her Hoosier career in dramatic fashion. The senior hit .331 for the season and stole 24 bases, in the process setting the Hoosiers all-time record for career stolen bases with 96. Jenkins led the conference with 18 doubles on the season to set a new Indiana program record for single season doubles. Jenkins hit her first career home run in walk off fashion to beat Penn State and added two more home runs on the season. Jenkins earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors following the Hoosiers series with Ohio State in which she hit .714 with 10 hits. Jenkins was selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Defensive Team.
Jenkins was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree. Jenkins earned a degree from Indiana in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. Among the softball team they constantly talk about what a good teammates Jenkins is and how she has left a legacy for the program to follow.
After arriving to Indiana as a graduate transfer from Central Michigan, Logan Targgart quickly became a key member of the men's track & field squad. One day while in the weight room with the rest of the throws squad, Targgart suffered an injury that would take him out of the indoor season. Rather than worry about himself, he apologized repeatedly that practice was interrupted for his teammates because of him.
He would go on to compete in the outdoor season where he saw a season best heave of 65.29m (214' 2") in the hammer throw to place fifth at Big Ten Championships. He ended his career at the NCAA East Prelim where he placed 29th and saw a mark of 61.08m (200' 5")
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.
All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
