BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Basketball has announced it will take part in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau, Bahamas at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Hyatt resort on November 25th and 27th. It will play two contests against the reigning national champion Stanford and Miami (FL).
The Hoosiers will face the Cardinal on Thanksgiving Day and the Hurricanes on Saturday. Both game times will be determined at a later date and will be streamed live through FloHoops.com.
Coming off one of its most historic seasons in school history, the Hoosiers return all five starters from a team that went 21-6 overall and made the NCAA Elite Eight in 2020-21. All-Americans junior forward Mackenzie Holmes (17.8 ppg. 7.6 rpg. 60.7 FG %) and senior guard Grace Berger (15.4 ppg., 6.8 rpg., 4.6 apg.). Graduate student guard Ali Patberg will return for her seventh and final season of collegiate eligibility as she also added double figures last season (14.0 ppg., 3.9 rpg., 3.6 apg.) while landing on the All-Big Ten second team. Head coach Teri Moren enters her eighth season leading the Hoosiers.
This will be the third meeting between Indiana and Stanford, coached by IU alum Tara Vanderveer who enters her 43rd season as a collegiate coach. The Cardinal went on to win the 2021 NCAA Championship last season over Arizona. They return four of its five leading scorers from last season highlighted by All-American junior guard Haley Jones (13.2 ppg., 7.4 rpg.) and senior guard Lexie Hull (11.6 ppg., 5.1 rpg.). Stanford went 31-2 overall last season and 19-2 in Pac 12 play to earn the league's regular season and tournament title.
IU will meet Miami for the second time in three seasons in a series that's tied at 2-2 overall. The two teams last met in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in a battle of two ranked teams in Coral Gables, Fla. Indiana was victorious in the meeting between the two then ranked teams, 58-45, on Dec. 4, 2019. They went 11-11 overall in 2020-21 and 8-10 in ACC action. Returning for the Hurricanes in 2021-22 are leading scorer graduate student guard Kelsey Marshall (13.2 ppg.) and senior forward Destiny Harden (10.7 ppg., 5.4 rpg.).
Pink Flamingo Championship
On schedule the same days as the Bahamas Championship, college basketball's top women's programs take the floor in the "Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship" starting on Thursday, Nov. 25 with six of the seven participating teams having played in last season's NCAA Tournament. The majority of the teams will play two games each on Thursday/Saturday but defending NCAA champ Stanford will play three straight days, Thursday-Saturday. All seven games of the Pink Flamingo Championship will be broadcast on FloHoops.
The slate of games in the Pink Flamingo Championship will likely feature multiple top-10 clashes with Stanford, Maryland, NC State and Indiana all being projected to be elite programs next season. A Final Four-worthy doubleheader tips off the action with NC State facing Maryland and Indiana battling Stanford in the first two games of women's action on Thursday. On Saturday, Stanford plays Maryland which could be a preview of the 2022 NCAA Championship game as the two programs are the highest rated teams in the field and in the top-five nationally.
"In most early season events, you are lucky if you see one top-10 match-up; we may have three such games in Nassau," said Women's Tournament Director and ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli. "In all my years in the game, I don't know if I have ever seen so many quality teams in one field. Every game will have an NCAA Tournament level of play and several of these games will be on par with the Final Four. Fans are in for a treat with not only Baha Mar but the play on the court."
