AUSTIN, Texas – Indiana women's soccer senior goalkeeper Bethany Kopel was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American first team honoree after the College Sports Information Directors of America announced their Academic All-America® Division I women's soccer teams on Monday afternoon.
Kopel becomes the first in program history to earn a spot on the first team. Additionally, she is the second player to earn this award since fellow classmate Allison Jorden was named to the third team in 2019. Indiana University is also one of five schools to have Academic All-American selections on both the men's and women's teams.
The Nova, Michigan native adds her fifth award to the 2020-21 season. Kopel was named Academic All-Big Ten in December and earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. She was also honored as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for a GPA of 3.7 or higher and an Academic All-Big Ten award recipient. Kopel finished the season with 1025 minutes played, 44 saves, four shutouts, and collected six wins to tie the program record for most conference victories in a season. She also collected Big Ten Goalkeeper of the week after shutouts against Rutgers and Iowa.
Kopel graduated with her bachelor's degree in human biology with a 3.99 GPA. She will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 and return to Indiana.
