Merchent Finishes U.S. Amateur in Match Play

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Clay Merchent was eliminated int the Round of 64 after playing brilliantly in the opening two rounds of stroke play during the 121st U.S. Amateur played at the Oakmont Country Club and Longue Vue Club in Pennsylvania throughout the week.
Merchent advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament after shooting a 1-under 139 through the first two rounds of stroke play. He entered match play as the No. 21 seed.
Sophomore Drew Salyers finished tied for 279th overall with a two-round score of 157 (17-over). He improved upon his first-round score by seven strokes on the second round of competition that included a birdie on No. 13 and an eagle on the Par 5, 550-yard fourth hole.

• Merchent was one of 61 golfers, in a field of 311 competitors, to shoot 71 or better in the opening round of the tournament. He played a very steady round that included two birdies (No. 4 and No. 6) and 13 holes finished at par.
• The Noblesville, Ind., native was one of only 14 players to card a birdie or better on the sixth hole and one of 39 competitors to play No. 4 to a stroke under par. The average scorecard turned in on the par-5 No. 4 was 5.13, while golfers averaged a score of 3.39 on the par-3 No. 6.
• The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year carded a 2-under 68 in the second round to extend his tournament into the knockout-style match play. He secured four birdies during the morning round after a prolonged weather delay pushed the round from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning.
• Merchent carded three of his four birdies in the final eight holes he played and was 2-under on the front nine (the last nine he played). His birdies came on No. 2, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 13.
• The match play saw Merchent defeated by Grayson Blunt, who shot 5-under through 12 holes. Blunt advanced to the Round of 32.
• The eagle in the second round from Salyers was one of only five carded on the fourth hole in the second round. Only 42 eagles were holed out during the first two rounds of competition.
