WESTFIELD, Ind. – The preseason No. 2-ranked Indiana men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Wright State on Thursday night at Grand Park in the program's second of three preseason exhibition matches.
KEY MOMENTS
• The first Hoosier ball to find the back of the net was negated after the offside flag was shown by the sideline official in the 15th minute of action.
• Nearly 10 minutes later, Indiana turned loose two shots in a scramble situation inside the Raider 18-yard box. Both shots were blocked by Wright State defenders and eventually cleared.
• Indiana finally broke through in the 33rd minute off a set piece. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Quinten Helmer took a corner, swung the ball in, and found junior forward Maouloune Goumballe. The Cincinnati native slid in to slot the ball past the keeper from six yards out to give IU the 1-0 lead.
• Wright State leveled the score in the 39th minute when a scramble inside the Hoosier box led to an uncontested eight-yard shot from senior midfielder Harvey Slade. He was able to squeeze the ball between defenders and find the back of the net for the equalizer.
• Indiana wasted no time in regaining the advantage. Goumballe scored his second goal of the match off a wonderfully crossed ball from senior defender Nyk Sessock. Goumballe redirected the cross and scored the header from point-blank range in the 40th minute to give IU the 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
• Wright State was able to find a second equalizer in the 50th minute off a throw-in. Senior forward Joe Kouadio took the throw in and raced down the right flank before finding a cross to senior forward John Lynam. He put home a sliding effort right in front of goal to tie the score at 2-2.
• The Hoosiers were again quick on the response and regained the lead in the 53rd minute of play when freshman forward Samuel Sarver was taken down by the WSU keeper in the box. Junior striker Victor Bezerra stepped up to the spot and calmy beat the goaltender.
• Sarver played a big role in IU's fourth and final goal of the match when he flipped the field on a wide ball to freshman midfielder Tommy Mihalic. The Skokie, Ill., native collected the pass and dumped it off to Bezerra in the middle of the 18-yard box. The reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year had no trouble blasting the ball past the keeper to settle the scoreboard at the final tally of 4-2.
