BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A familiar name is coming back in a coaching role as Indiana Softball head coach Shonda Stanton announced career stolen bases record holder Gabbi Jenkins will return as a volunteer assistant coach.
For Jenkins her final season in Bloomington as a player was a memorable one.
The senior hit .331 for the season and stole 24 bases, in the process setting the Hoosiers all-time record for career stolen bases with 96. Jenkins led the conference with 18 doubles on the season to set a new Indiana program record for single season doubles. Jenkins hit her first career home run in walk off fashion to beat Penn State and added two more home runs on the season. Jenkins earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors following the Hoosiers series with Ohio State in which she hit .714 with 10 hits.
"Gabbi is the ultimate Hooiser with her love, gratitude, and passion for her teammates, staff and Indiana University," IU head coach Shonda Stanton said. "She played a tremendous role in the growth of our program, and we are excited she desires to continue to impact and connect our past, present, and future success. Gabbi is unmatched in terms of character, academic achievement, competitive excellence and service, making her a tremendous addition to our staff."
Jenkins was selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team, All-Defensive Team and NFCA All-Region. She earned Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors as well as a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District selection.
"To step into a role where I get to learn from and serve with some of the best in the game is a privilege," Jenkins said. "I have seen what it looks like for this staff to invest in my journey empowering and equipping me for my days beyond the field and I am eager to invest that right back into this program as we chase the goals we have for Indiana Softball."
Jenkins, who has an undergraduate degree from IU in Elementary Education and is working towards a degree in Educational Leadership, earned recognition earlier this year as the Indiana Athletics female nominee for the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
