Bezerra, Celentano Named to First Team
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana junior forward Victor Bezerra, junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano, redshirt senior Spencer Glass, and freshman midfielder Tommy Mihalic were named to Top Drawer Soccer Best XI teams ahead of the 2021 season, the publication announced on Wednesday morning.
Bezerra and Celentano were both added to the first team. Glass appeared on the second team, while Mihalic earned a spot on the freshman team.
The Hoosiers were one of five programs with at least two selections on the first and second teams combined and one of three programs (Pittsburgh, Wake Forest) to have three players named to one of the top two squads.
Adding in the Freshman Best XI, Indiana joined Georgetown as the only school to boast four names on the list.
VICTOR BEZERRA
Preseason Best XI First Team
Bezerra led the 2020-21 Hoosiers in goals scored (12), shots (50), shots on goal (26), game-winning goals (4) and total points (28) a season ago. His 12 goals scored last season marked the most by a Hoosier since Eriq Zavaleta netted 18 scores in 2012. Since 2006, only two Hoosiers have scored more goals than Bezerra in a single season: Will Bruin (18 in 2010) and Zavaleta (18 in 2012).
The 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy runner-up lit up the exhibition slate with five goals scored in two games worth of run.
ROMAN CELENTANO
Preseason Best XI First Team
Celentano was selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team after conceding only six goals in 16 games played last season for a goals-against average of 0.36 as a sophomore. The Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year made 59 total saves (0.908 save percentage) and carded 10 clean sheets.
SPENCER GLASS
Preseason Best XI Second Team
Despite missing nearly half the matches last season, Glass still found a way on the All-North Region First Team and All-Big Ten First Team and led the conference in assists (5) and assists per game (.625). He also captained one of the nation's top defenses.
TOMMY MIHALIC
Preseason Freshman Best XI Team
Mihalic joined the team at the semester but was unable to play due to NCAA restrictions on midyear enrollees during the COVID-19 postponed season in 2020-21. In the leadup to the fall season, Mihalic scored one goal and posted a team-best two assists in three exhibition contests.
The preseason No. 2-ranked Indiana Hoosiers open the season on the road against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. ET on Aug. 27. The match will be available on ACCNX with David Korzeniowski and Paddy Foss on the call.
