Mihalic Nets Braces in First Start
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana men's soccer team (1-0-0) rallied late to top the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (0-1-0) by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
KEY MOMENTS
• Notre Dame struck first in the match with a goal in the 10th minute of play. The Irish found a header inside the six-yard box from graduate forward Dawson McCartney but junior keeper Roman Celentano made a brilliant save. Unfortunately, the ball bounced right to the foot of senior forward Jack Lynn, who put the ball into the upper right corner of goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
• Freshman midfielder Tommy Mihalic leveled the score in the 34th minute with an excellent individual run through the Irish box. He beat the defense and slid a right-footed shot from 10 yards out past the keeper for the equalizer.
• A misplay in the Hoosier back third led to the second Irish goal. ND found a ball in a scramble inside the box. McCartney was fortunate to gain possession and put the ball in the back of the net in the 57th minute with the left foot.
• Freshman forward Samuel Sarver made a deep run into the Notre Dame box that led to a handball and a penalty kick for the Hoosiers. Mihalic took the PK but it was saved from Irish sophomore keeper Bryan Dowd. Mihalic gathered the rebound and buried the equalizer in the 87th minute for his second goal of the contest.
• The match winner came off the left foot of redshirt junior midfielder Ben Yeagley. The Bloomington native collected a loose ball just atop the 18-yard box and sent in a laser to beat the ND keeper for the golden goal.
