Hoosiers Place Three on Big Ten Watch List

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Mitch Davis, sophomore Clay Merchent and sophomore Drew Salyers of the Indiana men's golf team were named Big Ten Players to Watch, the league announced on Tuesday morning.
Davis has competed in 66 rounds in his first three seasons with the Cream and Crimson. The Chesterton graduate has two top-25 finishes to his credit at the Big Ten Championships and placed inside the top-10 of three events during his junior campaign. He freshman scoring average of 73.27 ranked as the second-best ever recorded by a Hoosier rookie in the 2018-19 season.
Merchent, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, earned four top-10 finishes and a pair of top-5 efforts in his debut season. He played 24 rounds as a rookie and posted a round average of 72.46, the lowest average by a Hoosier freshman in program history. His stroke average is the 10th best number carded by a Hoosier and the lowest number since 2010 (minimum 20 rounds played). He is one of three IU golfers to be named the league's freshman of the year.
Salyers played all 24 rounds for the Hoosiers as a freshman and posted a round average of 73.83, the fourth-lowest tally recorded by an IU freshman in program history. He registered a pair of top-10 finishes in 2020-21, including a season-best 5-under par 211 in his collegiate debut at the General Hackler Championship.
The Hoosiers open the 2021-22 season as hosts of the Hoosier Collegiate from Sept. 5-6 at The Pfau Course in Bloomington.
