BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following the opening day of fall camp, Indiana associate head football coach Deland McCullough, wide receiver Ty Fryfogle, and cornerback Tiawan Mullen each spoke to the media inside Memorial Stadium.
Below are partial transcripts from McCullough, Fryfogle, and Mullen.
Deland McCullough | Associate Head Coach
On the depth at running back…
DM: The great thing is you have a bunch of guys in there that understand what is at stake and it's an opportunity for all of them to show what they can do. At some point, you have to write someone first on the depth chart, but those guys know that doesn't mean what is going to happen as we go through the competition of this preseason. As we go through [fall camp], trying to spread the reps around and give a bunch of guys opportunities behind the number one offensive line, but more importantly no matter what line they are behind, making sure the details and execution are at a level you need it to be at. It'll be a day-to-day thing and all of the guys are embracing the competition and that is what you want.
On Trent Howland…
DM: He has nice size and is continuing to develop in the weight room and different things like that and learning the system. He is coming back and nursing an injury that he had his senior year. When he is fully available it will be something that we will be able to evaluate. At this point he is getting the mental reps and continuing to put himself in a position to be 100 percent healthy when the time comes.
On how the running game can add to the offense…
DM: What was the intriguing part about returning to IU, looking at the overall offensive system they have, great minds up there and put some touches in that running back room to help to continue to upgrade that. Some of the things as far as the run reads, the things we emphasize in there as far as the eyes, timing, pace, and velocity are the things that it takes for a great runner to be successful. Those are the things that are being stressed currently and that was going on through the spring. I'm very confident as we get into the season and live situations those things will bear out. The more exciting part is you have your full complement and all these guys here. You have David Ellis, you have a bunch of guys you didn't have access to in the spring that you will get a chance to see here when we get rolling.
Tiawan Mullen | CB | Jr.
On what he is focusing on during camp...
TM: I feel like in all areas I can be a better player. Putting the team first is the most important thing in my eyes and as long as we got our [individual] stuff together in the offseason, getting the guys back together and working with them and fixing errors [will be important for the team]. I can just communicate better and be more vocal, really. We did a great job with that last year, but things can always improve.
On how his versatility fits on the defense...
TM: It is the same thing [from last year], just being ready to play inside and outside, nickelback or cornerback. If they need me to cover the slot [receiver], they know I can do that. If they need me to blitz, I've improved on that since my freshman year. Continuing the versatility with me is just showing [the coaches] that I can play on any part of the field and get the job done for the team.
On how the program has grown since he arrived and the expectations in 2021...
TM: [This season] can be special for the whole organization and for our team. I always expected this coming into my freshman year. We have a different mindset this season, we expect to go win one game at a time. We are not going into the games with any doubts in our minds. Coach Allen always says you have to have more positive thoughts than negative thoughts throughout your day. If we get better every day, think positive and expect to win, we are just changing the program around [day-by-day]. People can see it, but we try to do it in a humble way, put God first, keep our heads low, and keep winning.

On Javon Swinton's development entering camp...
TF: Javon [Swinton] has had a really good offseason as far as the summer: getting better at route running, learning plays, and learning defenses. I am really excited about what he can do this fall.
On the excitement for day one of practice...
TF: It was great being out there today with our full team and all of the coaches. Having everyone together and seeing the potential of how great we can be this season. Now we have to see how we are going to put things together during fall camp.
On what the receivers are doing to get ready for the season...
TF: Getting our work in with the quarterbacks as far as watching film and getting reps with everyone. [Fall camp] is about getting reps for everyone and everybody learning together - as far as the younger guys and the older guys. Getting everyone together as a whole team and learning together is the best way.
On what he worked on this offseason...
TF: I think I have [improved] in a lot of areas: learning coverages, route running, my speed, and getting separation, which was a big thing that I wanted to work on. That was what I heard all [offseason], "he needs to get better separation." That was one of the main factors I worked on this offseason.
