BLOOMINGTON, Ind - Fourth-year head coach Angel Escobedo and the Indiana Wrestling team announced its 2021-2022 Schedule on Wednesday morning.
After a year of conference-only competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IU program returns to a full schedule in the upcoming season.
"We are grateful to be back in action this season with both non-conference and conference opponents," Escobedo said. "We've added two new out-of-conference opponents in Ohio and Bellarmine and we will return to the prestigious Midlands Championships this year."
IU returns three NCAA qualifiers from a year ago in the form of Graham Rooks, Cayden Rooks and Donnell Washington. Those three, along with Brock Hudkins, made InterMat's Preseason Rankings List for the upcoming campaign.
The Hoosiers will begin the year on Saturday, November 6th with a trip to Louisville, KY to take on SIUE and Bellarmine in a tri-duel. The following weekend, IU will head to Boone, NC for the Mountaineer Invitational.
IU opens its home slate with a duel against Duke on November 20th. December will take IU to the Cleveland State Open on the 11th and the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. on December 29th and 30th. IU will wrap up the early non-conference portion of the schedule with a match against Ohio on January 4th.
Once again, the Big Ten Conference figures to be tough from top to bottom this season. This marks the first season of the divisional format for wrestling. IU will take on all six Big Ten East opponents and wrestle in two crossover matches against opponents in the Big Ten West. The divisions will be the same that are used in football.
IU opens the conference portion of its schedule with a trip to Rutgers on January 7th followed by a match at Penn State on January 9th. IU ends the month of January with three-straight matches at home. Michigan State and Maryland come to Bloomington on the 17th and 21th respectively before IU welcomes in-state rival Purdue to town on January 29th.
The Hoosiers will visit Illinois on February 6th and Ohio State on February 13th with a home match against Michigan sandwiched between the two on February 11th. To wrap up the regular season, IU will wrestle Chattanooga in Bloomington on February 20th.
This year's Big Ten Championships will be held in Nebraska on March 5th-6th and the NCAA Championships will take place in Detroit, MI from March 17th-19th.
"We're excited to host six home matches and we can't wait to compete in front of our fans once again," Escobedo said.
