BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 11-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (3-2-1) could not overcome two second half goals from the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-0-1) and lost 2-1 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Friday night.
KEY MOMENTS
• Redshirt junior defender Daniel Munie scored his second goal in as many contests in the 23rd minute of play. The reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week found a bouncing ball near the top of the 18-yard box and struck a liner with his right foot to beat the Rutgers keeper.
• The visiting Scarlet Knights would find the equalizer in the 58th minute with a goal from freshman forward Nico Rosamilia. The Roseland, N.J., native attempted a tough pass into the Hoosier six-yard box that was deflected back to his right foot. His take was deflected by junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano, who was credited with two saves in the loss, but still managed to trickle into the back of the net.
• Rutgers found the winning goal 12 minutes later when sophomore forward Ola Mealand played a pass off his chest to a cutting Jackson Temple. The junior midfielder guided the ball off the outside of his right foot while sliding to the left of goal. The shot arched over the outstretched arms of Celentano to give Rutgers the 2-1 advantage with 20 to play.
• The best chance at an equalizer for IU came via a corner kick in the 81st minute. The take was sent to junior forward Victor Bezerra, who attempted a long-range shot. The attempt was high of frame and went out of play.
NOTABLES
• Munie scored a goal for the second-straight match. Entering the 2021 season, the Maryland Heights, Mo., product had totaled two career tallies. He has now doubled that output in the last eight days.
• Indiana falls to 23-3-5 all-time in Big Ten Conference season openers. The last time IU did not see a result in the conference opener was in 2015, a 1-0 setback against Penn State.
• The Hoosiers have earned a decision in 38 of the last 41 Big Ten matches played over the last six seasons and have outscored the league opponents by a tally of 74-21 in those matchups.
• Indiana had not conceded a goal in five-straight matches against Rutgers entering the Friday night match, a streak that spanned over 470 minutes of soccer.
