Hoosiers Host Iowa on Big Ten Network Thursday
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's soccer team (6-2-1) will host Iowa in a nationally televised match on the Big Ten Network on Thursday Sept. 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES
Iowa comes in with a record of 7-1-1 on the season with their only defeat on the road at Kansas. The Hawkeyes won their Big Ten opener last week at home 2-1 against
Northwestern. In the shortened spring season of 2021 Iowa won their program's first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship, defeating Wisconsin in the final. Iowa beat
Campbell in the first round of the NCAA tournament before dropping a match to
UCLA. The Hawkeyes finished that season with an overall record of 7-9-1. Last season the Hoosiers beat Iowa 2-0 in Bloomington.
WEBBER, GERSTENBERG EARN BIG TEN HONORS
Paige Webber earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Jamie Gerstenberg earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 14. Webber got a hat trick against Murray State and added an assist in the Hoosiers win at Kansas State. Gerstenberg has three straight shutouts and six shutouts on the season.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
Against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday the Hoosiers scored six goals, their most in a match since the 2011 season. All six goals came in the first half of the match, which set a program record for goals in a half. Six different players scored the six goals for the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers hold a 17-3 advantage in goal scoring over their opponents this season and have scored 13 goals in their last four matches.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT NIGHT
On Thursday the Hoosiers will be hosting international student groups and welcome all to come out to Bill Armstrong Stadium. There will be a pre-match tailgate and post-match autographs with the team.
MAKING HISTORY AT NOTRE DAME
For the first time in program history the Hoosiers got a result against Notre Dame. On Sunday the Hoosiers and Fighting Irish battled to a 0-0 draw. Previously the Hoosiers were 0-11 all-time against Notre Dame.
2021 SPRING SEASON
The 2021 spring season was historic for the Hoosiers. Indiana tied a program record for Big Ten wins and established a new school record for Big Ten points in a season with 19. On March 2, the Hoosiers were ranked in the top-25 for the first time since 2013.
PRESEASON POLL AND HONORS
The Big Ten announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Players to Watch List on Monday with senior Hanna Nemeth, junior Avery Lockwood and freshman Jamie Gerstenberg representing Indiana. In addition, the preseason poll was unveiled with the Hoosiers coming in in sixth place. Both were voted on by the conference coaches.
Lockwood, a midfielder from Grand Rapids, Mich., earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors and was selected by the United Soccer Coaches to the All-North Region third team in the 2021 spring season. Lockwood, a leader for Indiana's offense, scored a couple of game winners against Michigan and Michigan State. She started in all 12 games tallying a total of 24 shots and 15 shots on goal. Nemeth scored her first career goal against Penn State on March 4 and held Indiana's back line strong aiding the Hoosiers four shutouts, including a shutout of Michigan for the first time since 2009.
NEW FACES FOR THE HOOSIERS
The Hoosiers have several new players on the roster that should see playing time this season. Among them are eight freshmen and three transfers. The Hoosiers return their entire starting lineup from the 2021 spring season as well.
TOKYO OLYMPICS
Sophomore Gabi Rennie made the New Zealand national team for the Tokyo Olympics. In New Zealand's first match of the Olympics, against Australia, Rennie entered the game in the 89th minute and two minutes later scored a goal on her only touch of the game. It was extra special for Rennie as her brother Liam, a member of the New Zealand media attended the game.
