
IUVB Opens Lid On Big Ten Play Friday And Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Volleyball (6-6) opens Big Ten Conference play this weekend against Michigan State (7-2) and No. 7 Purdue (8-1). The Hoosiers will face the Spartans on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m. and will then face in-state foe No. 7 Purdue on Sunday, September 26 at 2 p.m. Both matches will stream live on BTN+.

The Opening Serve
• The Hoosiers spent last weekend hosting the Indiana Invitational inside Wilkinson Hall. Indiana defeated Alabama A&M in straight sets before falling to Chicago State and Ole Miss the following day.
• Junior middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg leads the squad in kills and hitting percentage with 91 kills and a percentage of .425. Her .425 ranks fifth among the Big Ten Conference.
• Junior defensive specialist Paula Cerame has recorded a team leading 201 digs. This is good for sixth in the Big Ten. She is also averaging 4.28 per set.
• As a team, Indiana has put up 158 bocks which is eighth in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are averaging 2.60 blocks per set.
All-Time Series
• The Boilermakers hold a 72-34 all-time series record. Last time out the Hoosiers fell in straight sets on the road, 3-0 (18-25, 11-25, 14-25).
• Michigan State gets the edge over the Hoosiers in the all-time series, 30-50. The last time the two squads met was in the 2019 season where Indiana won in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20. 25-23, 25-22) before falling to the Spartans later in the year, 3-1 (18-25, 15-25, 25-20, 22-25).

• MICHIGAN STATE: Cathy George is at the helm of the Spartans program and is in her 17th year. Michigan State has started the 2021 campaign hot with a 7-2 record so far. Their two losses have come at the foot of Wright State and BYU. The Spartans attack is led by senior middle blocker Rebecka Pojian who has tallied 74 kills and a hitting percentage of .473. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Sarah Franklin leads the squad on defense with 39 total blocks this season.
• PURDUE: The Boilermakers are coached by Dave Shondell who is in his 19th season as head coach. Purdue is ranked No. 7 in the country and have played to an 8-1 record with their only loss coming to then No. 10 Louisville on Sept.10 at the Xavier University Tournament. The Boilermakers are led by senior outside hitter Grace Cleveland, and she has recorded 98 kills and a hitting percentage of .379. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Trammell has a team-leading 34 blocks this season on defense.
Last Time Out
• The Hoosiers hosted their first home tournament in nearly two years this past weekend. They opened the three-game set with a match against Alabama A&M in which they defeated the Bulldogs in straight sets, 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-17). Freshman Mady Saris led the Indiana attack with 15 kills while also tallying a block. Sophomore Elle Hillers earned her first career start and junior Sophie Oliphant saw the court for the first time this season.
• Next, Indiana faced Chicago State in an early morning match where the Hoosiers dropped the match to the Cougars, 3-0 (21-25, 26-28, 23-25). Senior Breana Edwards and sophomore Savannah Kjolhede had double-figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Kjolhede also put up a team-leading four blocks.
• In the final match of the weekend, Indiana faced Ole Miss who entered the weekend unbeaten. Despite keeping each set close, the Hoosiers fell to the Rebels, 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 24-26). Edwards had a team-high 13 kills while also recording two blocks.

• Senior outside hitter Breana Edwards recorded her 1000th kill of her career in the match at Georgia Tech on Sept. 10.
• Graduate Student setter Brooke Westbeld has put up 343 assists which leads the team.
