Indiana Wrestling Hosts Michigan State in Home Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –– After over a week off from their last dual, Indiana Wrestling will take on Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 in Wilkinson Hall.

EXAMINING MICHIGAN STATE:
- Michigan State is the first team outside of the rankings, receiving 17 votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll.
- Prior to facing the Hoosiers, Michigan State will play at No. 12 Purdue on Saturday, Jan. 15.
- The Spartans have had lots of success in invites this season. On Nov. 20, Michigan State won first place at the Navy Classic (Annapolis, MD.) and third place at the Southern Scuffle (Chattanooga, Tenn.)
- Michigan State features four wrestlers who are nationally ranked by InterMat: No. 11 Rayvon Foley (133), No. 19 Chase Saldate (157), No. 29 Layne Malczewski (184), and No. 18 Cameron Caffey (197).
RUTGERS AND PENN STATE REWIND:
- Indiana opened the Big Ten schedule with road losses at No. 12 Rutgers (L, 7-29) and No. 2 Penn State (L, 11-29).
- On the weekend, graduate student Brock Hudkins (133) picked up two wins in dominant fashion.
- At Rutgers, Hudkins shutout Devin Britton, 6-0 by decision. At Penn State, Hudkins had his most impressive win of the season, victory by an 18-3 tech fall (5:30) over Baylor Shunk.
- Against Rutgers, junior Jacob Bullock (HWT) went on an uninterrupted 7-0 run to pick up an impressive 9-1 major decision win over Boone McDermott.
- Junior Cayden Rooks (141) snapped a two-loss streak for his first Big Ten win of the season in a 9-4 win by decision over Penn State's Brandon Meredith.
- Sophomore Derek Gilcher (157) made his mark against Penn State, earning his first Big Ten dual win of his career over Tony Negron, by 4-1 decision.
- Indiana and Rutgers participated in two exhibition matches prior to the official start of the dual.
- The exhibition matches saw both Indiana participants ––– freshman Noah Gochberg (133) and junior Kasper McIntosh (165) ––– notch victories.
HOME, SWEET HOME:
- Indiana's dual vs Michigan State will be the Hoosiers' first at home in Wilkinson Hall all season.
- This will start a three-match homestand for Indiana.
LATEST RANKINGS:
- In the latest InterMat rankings, Indiana kept its four usual wrestlers nationally ranked.
- Redshirt Sophomore D.J. Washington (184) stayed put at No. 8.
- Hudkins' (133) ascent continued, moving to No. 18.
- Jacob Moran (125) and C. Rooks (141) were slotted at No. 33 and No. 30, respectively.
BROCK THE ROCK:
- After his performance last weekend, Hudkins' excellent season continues as he is undefeated at 7-0 and 5-0 in dual matches with a +39 point differential.
