Indiana Field Hockey Set for Road Game at Maryland

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– As winners of eight of their last eleven games, Indiana Field Hockey is in good position ahead of its road test at No. 2 Maryland this Friday for their only game of the weekend.
As the home stretch of the season ensues, there is a lot at stake for the Hoosiers.
CORNER HITS:
-SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Indiana will face a top tier opponent this weekend, as the Hoosiers play No. 2 Maryland in College Park.
-The Terrapins are winners of their last four games, defeating three top ten opponents in that span, including Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern.
-MARYLAND:
-Maryland's season has been nothing short of impressive, as the Terrapins have started out 11-1.
-Maryland has defeated seven ranked programs throughout the season.
-The Terrapins' only loss of the year was at No. 7 Princeton, when they lost 4-3 in overtime.
-In this week's Big Ten weekly honorees, Maryland swept the award cyle, having a Terrapin win each award.
-Dani Van Rootselaar was named offensive player of the week. Rayne Wright was named defensive player of the week and Sophie Klautz was the Big Ten freshman of the week.
-Maryland's offensive attack is led by a trio that includes Van Rootselaar, who has scored nine goals and recorded two assists this year, as well as Hope Rose and Leah Crouse.
-Rose is tied for fourth in the Big Ten for most goals scored with 10, and is second in the conference for points with 27.
-Crouse has seven goals on the year.
-On the season, Maryland is outscoring opponents 45 to 16, and averages 3.75 goals scored per game.
-AROUND THE BIG TEN:
-The regular season Big Ten title race is still in its early stages, but competition is tight.
-Indiana is currently in a three-way tie for fifth in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers, Northwestern and Michigan are all 1-2 in conference play.
-Maryland, Penn State, and Iowa occupy the top three spots. Rutgers is in fourth at 2-3.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Last weekend, Indiana was at home for two ranked matchups against No. 21 Rutgers and No. 6 Penn State.
-The Hoosiers went 1-1 on the weekend, beating Rutgers, 2-0, while losing to Penn State, 4-0.
-The win over Rutgers marked both the Hoosiers' first ranked victory of the season while also being the team's first Big Ten win this year.
-It was Indiana's first win over Rutgers since 2016.
-The entire game against Rutgers was a battle, proving to be close the whole way through. The game was scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter when Indiana found the back of the net twice.
-In the 54th minute, sophomore Sofia Arrebola Garcia scored off the penalty corner to put Indiana up 1-0 and then all the momentum of the game shifted the Hoosiers' way. Sydney Keld assisted on the goal.
-Just two minutes later, the Hoosiers scored on another penalty corner, this time sophomore Yip van Wonderen scored, assisted from Anna Mozeleski to seal the game at 2-0.
-The loss to Penn State was a tough one for Indiana, but the Hoosiers created plenty of opportunities and pushed the Nittany Lions' defense, getting eight shot attempts.
-Indiana also earned at least two penalty corners in three of the four quarters.
-Freshman goalkeeper Nina Faupel registered her first minutes of her collegiate career, entering the game midway through the third period.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Junior Jemima Cookson leads the team in goals scored with six, she also has one assist on the season. Redshirt junior Sydney Keld is second on the team in goals with four, while also recording three assists.
-Keld also leads the entire NCAA in defensive saves with nine.
-For assists, sophomore Yip van Wonderen leads Indiana with four. She also has three goals to her name this year.
-In total, nine Hoosiers have found the back of the net through this point in the season.
-Three freshmen: Anna Mozeleski, Jule Hufer and Emma Thompson, have started every game for the Hoosiers this season.
-Sophomore goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has made 49 saves to this point in the season. She also has recorded four shutouts this season, with ten overall in her career.
-Loveridge is currently tied for the most shutouts in the Big Ten among all goalkeepers.
-As a team, Indiana is making 4.54 saves per game, which ranks them fourth in the Big Ten as a team in that statistic.
-Indiana is scoring an average of 2.00 goals per game compared to their opponents' average of 1.69.
-Throughout the season, Indiana is averaging about 9.1 shots per game and the team is shooting on goal at a clip of 61.0%.
-This weekend's slate will be Indiana's first weekend of the season where the team only plays one game. The matchup vs. Maryland will also be the Hoosiers' sixth game against a ranked opponent.
-Freshman Anna Mozeleski was named IU's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J. for the 2018 fall season.
