Hoosiers Fall in Five-Set Heartbreaker to Maryland

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A back-and-forth affair on Black Friday ended in the favor of the visiting Terrapins as the Indiana Volleyball team (16-16, 9-11) fell in five sets in the season finale.
The Hoosiers held a 2-1 lead through three sets, but Maryland responded to win the final two sets and take the match 25-21, 10-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8.
IU outhit Maryland .152-.117 and dug 65 balls to the Terps' 58 but were out blocked 16-12 and committed more errors on the evening.
The 2022 season comes to a conclusion with a 16-16, 9-11 record and an eighth-place finish in the conference after being selected 13th in the preseason poll.
Paula Cerame, in her final match, broke the program's record for the most digs in a single Big Ten season with 353.
She also became the third player in program history to record 500+ digs in a single season.
The Hoosiers will return six starters and a number of rotation players to next year's roster including the likes of Camryn Haworth, Mady Saris and Savannah Kjolhede.
SET 1 (Maryland 25, Indiana 21)
• The Hoosiers took their first lead of the evening at 8-6 following back-to-back aces from Camryn Haworth.
• Maryland went on a 3-0 run to open a 20-16 lead with a pair of attack errors from IU forcing Steve Aird into a timeout.
• The Terrapins won the first set following a kill from Anastasia Russ.
SET 2 (Indiana 25, Maryland 10)
• IU broke open the second set with a 9-3 start. Mady Saris had a tough service ace to force a Maryland timeout.
• Morgan Geddes and Mady Saris buried back-to-back kills as IU grabbed a 14-6 lead in the middle of the set.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles helped serve IU on a 7-0 run to take a 24-9 lead with three-consecutive kills from Mady Saris helping the Hoosiers take the commanding advantage.
• Savannah Kjolhede closed the set with a kill, part of a set that saw the Hoosiers hit .700 as a team.
SET 3 (Indiana 25, Maryland 20)
• A string of three-straight points that featured kills from Mady Saris and Candela Alonso-Corcelles helped break open a 14-9 advantage for IU.
• Morgan Geddes delivered a crucial block of Anastasia Russ as the Hoosiers took a 19-15 lead in the third.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles close out the proceedings in the third with a kill to give IU the 25-20 set victory and the match advantage.
SET 4 (Maryland 25, Indiana 20)
• IU took its first lead of the set at 9-8 following kills from Morgan Geddes and Candela Alonso-Corcelles.
• Morgan Geddes provided another kill as IU cut the gap to just one point at 15-16 in the middle of the set.
• Rainelle Jones delivered crucial blocks for Maryland down the stretch as a kill from Sam Csire forced a final set between the two teams.
SET 5 (Maryland 15, Indiana 8)
• The Terrapins opened the set with four-straight points including back-to-back blocks from Laila Ricks and Rainelle Jones.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles got an important kill to close the gap to 3-5 in the fifth set.
• Maryland was too much down the stretch, taking the final frame 15-8 and the match 3-2.
NOTABLES
• Camryn Haworth was stellar once again, recording a double-double with 42 assists and 18 digs. She also had five blocks, three aces and two kills to pair with it.
• Paula Cerame recorded a double-double in her final career match. She had 21 digs and 10 assists. For her IU career, she had 994 digs, No. 14 in program history.
• Cerame also holds the program record for digs in a Big Ten season and owns two of the top-five individual seasons in terms of digs in IU history.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles had 13 kills and seven digs to round out her freshman season.
• Morgan Geddes had 13 kills to pair with 12 from Mady Saris.
• Savannah Kjolhede hit .389 with eight kills on 18 swings. She paired that with five blocks.
