
Indiana Wrestling Opens Season with a Road Victory at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. ––– The Indiana Wrestling team opened their season on Friday night with a dual meet at Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
The Hoosiers flexed their muscle on the Cougars, winning, 26-15, on the night to start the season 1-0. Indiana started hot, winning their first five bouts to take a 20-0 lead.
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana junior Jacob Moran (125) got the Hoosiers rolling from the start with a dominant 12-2 win over Austin Macias to give Indiana 4-0 lead from the major decision.
• In his first collegiate bout and start, freshman Henry Porter (133) followed up Moran's impressive performance with a pin of Aaron Schulist.
• Indiana senior and No. 20 ranked Cayden Rooks (141) beat Caine Tyus in the night's third bout. A near fall in the third period and over two minutes of riding time sealed the deal for Rooks.
• In a tight battle, redshirt senior No. 23 Graham Rooks (149) broke a 2-2 tie in the third with a late takedown on Caleb Tyus to go up, 4-2. Rooks would hold on for a 4-3 win.
• Junior Derek Gilcher (157) got to his offense early, leading 9-1 after the first period and picked up a pair of escapes in the second and third to win over Max Kristoff, 11-2.
• Redshirt junior No. 18 Donnell Washington (174) had perhaps the most impressive win of the evening, pinning Chase Diehl in just 33 seconds.
NOTABLES
• Washington's pin was the 20th of his career.
• Four of Indiana's six wins were bonus point victories with two pins.
• Porter's first bout of his collegiate career was by pin.
• IU now leads the all-time series over SIUE, 32-7.

• Indiana Wrestling will be back in action tomorrow for their first open competition of the year. The Hoosiers will have 24 wrestlers competing in the Maryville Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open in Saint Louis. The event is hosted by Maryville University.
