Munie Repeats, Six Hoosiers Bag All-Big Ten Awards
11/4/2022 12:00:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — For the second straight season, Indiana men's soccer redshirt senior Daniel Munie was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, highlighting seven All-Big Ten honors that the conference office awarded to the Hoosiers on Friday (Nov. 4).
Munie was one of six Hoosiers to earn a Big Ten postseason award. With that specialty award, Munie also earned a first-team All-Big Ten selection alongside a fellow redshirt senior, forward Ryan Wittenbrink. Sixty-six IU men's soccer players have totaled 117 first-team All-Big Ten honors all-time, 65 more honors than the next best program (Penn State, 62).
Munie's achievement marks the second straight year in which an IU player has repeated as a specialty award honoree after Roman Celentano became the first-ever repeat Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021. Of the seven instances that a Big Ten student-athlete has repeated as a specialty award winner, Munie is the sixth Hoosier to do so and the first IU player in the defensive category. Ohio State's David Tiemstra is the only other player to win the defensive award in back-to-back seasons, doing so between 2010-11.
IU has had a specialty award winner in 13 straight seasons going back to 2010, totaling 24 player or coach of the year selections in that span.
Munie earned the honor again despite missing four matches due to injury. In his first four matches returning from injury, Munie tallied two goals, an assist and a clean sheet. All three of his goal contributions this season have come in conference matches.
Wittenbrink earned his first-career All-Big Ten selection after a breakout campaign. Between two seasons during the 2021 calendar year, Wittenbrink totaled eight goals and seven assists. Through the 2022 regular season, the Libertyville, Illinois, native has nearly surpassed that total with seven goals and six assists to his name. Wittenbrink is the only player that ranks top 10 in the Big Ten in goals, assists, points (20), game-winning goals (3), shots (39) and shots-on-goal (22). The redshirt senior is also a perfect 3-for-3 from the penalty spot this season.
A pair of forwards, senior Herbert Endeley and sophomore Tommy Mihalic, each earned second-team laurels. Mihalic and Endeley sit second and third on the team behind Wittenbrink in points, with 14 and 11, respectively. Mihalic, a Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection last year, has scored a career-high six goals with three of those coming in conference play. Receiving his third consecutive second team pick and fourth-career overall All-Big Ten selection, Endeley has recorded three goals and five assists this season. In a six-match span between September 9 and October 2, Endeley tallied six goal contributions with four of those coming in conference matches.
First-year midfielder Jack Wagoner placed on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after appearing in 14 of IU's 17 regular season matches. Wagoner has started four of IU's last five games down the stretch and tallied his first-career assist in the Michigan match.
Redshirt senior Brett Bebej was picked as IU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Starting 15 of his 16 appearances this season, Bebej has been dubbed the "Swiss Army Knife" for his ability and willingness to play multiple roles and positions for IU, seeing minutes at center back, outside back, center midfield and on the wing. The Shorewood, Illinois, native has tallied goals against Michigan State and Penn State.
Indiana will kick off postseason play when it hosts Penn State on Friday (Nov. 4) at Bill Armstrong Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
