ON THE SIDELINES
IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks) back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points.
Maryland interim coach Danny Manning is in his first year in College Park.
The duo combined to score 5,012 points in college (Manning, 2951, first all-time at Kansas). Both averaged 14.0 points in their NBA careers, while Manning averaged 20.1 ppg at Kansas and Woodson scored 19.8 points per game at IU.
DEFENSE LEADS THE HOOSIERS
IU is first in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (38.3%) and first in conference games only (40.7%). The Hoosiers are second in the league in scoring defense (64.8), 3FG defense (30.7%) and blocked shots (5.4). The Hoosiers 38.3% field goal defense mark would be the program's best in the last 23 seasons. IU held opponents to 38.8% shooting in 1999-2000.
ALL-AMERICAN TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS
Junior/sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 17.9 points (6th in B1G), 8.4 rebounds (53rd), shooting 57.0% from the floor (3rd) and contributing 2.5 blocked shots (1st).
He set a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall record by scoring 43 points against Marshall, breaking the previous mark (42) set by Steve Alford against Michigan State.
He has had nine double-doubles this season and 31 in his career with IU posting a 23-8 record in those games. He notched four straight double-doubles for the first time in his career after he had 23 points and 12 boards at Nebraska.
Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,413 points as a Hoosier, rating 21st all-time in IU lore.
Despite being limited to 11 minutes due to foul trouble against No. 4/4 Purdue, he defended a game-winning shot attempt and made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to extend the IU lead.
He had 17 points and nine boards at Maryland earlier this season.
THOMPSON MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
Redshirt Sr./Jr. Race Thompson has averaged 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in the last seven games and is shooting 46.7% from long distance in that time.
He is ranked eighth in the Big Ten in rebounding (7.9). Thompson had his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds at Michigan State. Recently, he had a season-high 18 points against Penn State and Maryland, while added his fourth double-double of the season when he grabbed 12 boards against the Terrapins.
He is second on the team averaging 11.8 points and shooting 54.4% from the field with 21 blocked shots. He leads the team with 29 steals.
ODDS AND TRENDS
Sr./Jr. Xavier Johnson went 10-for-10 from the free throw line at Ohio State. He is the first Hoosier to accomplish that feat since Al Durham made all of his 10 charity tosses in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.
Prior to sitting out Ohio State with an injury, So./Fr. Trey Galloway had started the last three games and is averaging 6.7 points in his last 10 outings. He tied career-highs in minutes (37), points (13) and rebounds (5) at Northwestern.
The Hoosiers 10-of-13 shooting (76.9%) from long range against Penn State was their third best shooting effort from distance since 1996-97 (USF, 1998 and Kent State, 2002).
In the last 14 games, IU has dropped its turnovers over five per game at 10.0 per contest.
