
Baseball Drops Twinbill at Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Indiana baseball program dropped both games of a doubleheader at on Sunday (March 13) on Riddle-Pace Field. The Hoosiers dropped a pair of tightly contested contests, 6-4 and 7-4.
Indiana (6-9) had its chances in each game of the doubleheader, but Troy (11-5) was up to the task in each game. In game one, IU took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, before Troy scored three times in the third. IU answered with two more in the fourth to recapture the lead, but the Trojans scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth to cap the scoring.
The Hoosiers then took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but Troy answered back with four of its own in the opening frame. IU tied the game in the third inning, but the Trojans scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh, before escaping a ninth-inning threat by IU.
Six different Hoosiers collected hits in the first game of the day. Graduate student Tyler Doanes and senior Phillip Glasser each reached base twice, while redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis and freshmen Josh Pyne and Carter Mathison all collected one RBI. Senior Bradley Brehmer (1-1) took the loss with five runs allowed over 3 2/3 innings.
Glasser and Pyne each collected three hits in the nightcap, and Doanes was on base twice. Pyne plated a pair of RBIs and Brock Tibbitts hit his fourth home run of the season and scored twice. IU out-hit Troy, 9-5, but the Trojans benefited from six walks and two hit-by-pitch, and five two-out hits accounted for all seven runs.
Starting pitcher John-Biagio Modugno (0-3) took the loss with four runs allowed in two-thirds of an inning of work. He walked four, allowed two hits and struck out two. Reliever Reese Sharp came out of the bullpen and stranded two inherited runners. He went on to throw 5 1/3 innings and allow one run on one hit. He struck out seven and walked one.

Tyler Doanes and Phillip Glasser started the games with base hits and a throwing error on Glasser's infield hit allowed Doanes to score. A pair of groundouts followed, as Matthew Ellis plated the second run of the game and the first RBI.

Troy put two runners on base with one out and Jesse Hall doubled to drive in the first Trojan run of the game. A walk to Rigsby Mosley was followed by a double steal to put runners on second and third. Clay Stearns' sacrifice fly gave Troy the lead.

Ellis doubled and came in to score on a Josh Pyne single to left-center field. Pyne moved to second on an errant throw and, with two outs, Carter Mathison laced an RBI doubled to left field to give IU the lead back.

A leadoff single from Brandon Schrepf was followed by a pair of outs that put the runner on second base. A pair of wild pitches allowed the tying run to score before Braydon Tucker came on to relieve Bradley Brehmer. A hit batter and infield single loaded the bases and Mosely delivered the go-ahead run with another infield single.

Another two-out RBI extended the Troy lead as Hall doubled down the left field line to score Donovan Whibbs, who was hit-by-pitch.

Indiana will return to Bart Kaufman Field on Tuesday, March 15 to host Kentucky. The 5 p.m. first pitch against the Wildcats will be the start of a 12-game homestand for IU.
